NYSPHSAA BOYS' SOCCER: CORNING EDGED BY DEFENDING STATE CHAMPIONS IN 2OT (September 4, 2026)

CORNING — The Corning Hawks faced a defending state championship team on Friday, and were edged 4-3 by East Aurora in double overtime.

East Aurora won the Class A state title a year ago, after winning the Class B state title in 2023.

Cooper Sargent and Landyn Proudfoot each had a goal in the game and Sargent and Logan Flynn had assists. 

The other Corning goal was an own goal by East Aurora. 

Nicky Carl and Luke Jamesson had two goals each for East Aurora. 

Ben Hufnagel had four saves for Corning and Jackson Suckow had five saves for East Aurora.

“After a storm cancellation to start the season it was ambitious to run out against the defending New York State Class A champions,” Corning coach Chad Freelove said. “It was an exciting match. Always tough to be on the wrong end of a double OT, but there are so many things to take away from tonight.

“Super proud of the effort from the guys. We will work to get better every single night. Ben Hufnagel played a tremendous match in the goal tonight.”
