ELMIRA HEIGHTS — The Horseheads girls’ tennis team has big numbers as they hit the courts to begin practices on Monday.

“It’s good,” Horseheads coach Doug Jacobs said. “We have got 31 signed up, which is growing. It’s bigger than last season. We lost a lot of seniors, but I’m really looking forward to getting going.”

The big numbers give the Blue Raiders a lot of options in the lineup this year.

“We really hope to get people playing, and playing well as quickly as possible, because we start right out with matches against Ithaca on the 8th, the first day of school,” Jacobs said. “We’ve got a lot of people playing very quickly, very well. With all these people there are going to be a lot of moving pieces.”

Things will be a little different this season as Horseheads will be practicing, and playing, at Elmira Heights as the Blue Raiders courts will have some work done on them.

“It’s been great,” Jacobs said of Elmira Heights letting them play there. “Mike Bennett has been great with the Heights, their athletic director. They worked it out so we can be down here while our courts are being repaired. It’s a little bit of an inconvenience, but we’ll make the best of it.”
