HORSEHEADS — A couple bad hops, an errant throw and the season came to an end for the Elmira baseball team with a 9-7 loss to Christian Brothers Academy in the NYSPHSAA Class AAA sub-regional game.

It was a game of swings as Elmira fell behind 4-0, went ahead 6-4 and saw a one-run lead in the seventh inning slip away.

Christian brothers struck first with a four-run third inning.

Elmira fought right back with six runs in the bottom of the inning go up 6-4.

Christian brothers tied the game in the fifth, before Elmira went ahead in the bottom of the sixth as Quinn Hanrahan was hit by a pitch with one out and with two outs Jackson Cavalier hit an RBI double.

In the seventh a couple of bad hops put runners on base and an error led to the go-ahead runs.

“It’s a tough game,” Elmira coach Justin Fuchs said. “It’s absolutely what we expected. We expected a battle. We expected a battle, we expected to win. We were prepared, our boys were ready. That team just went through a really tough series up in Syracuse. They were ready to. It was super disappoint to lose like this. This is a disappointed group of kids. They have worked so hard, for so long. We wish we were playing another game. Shoutout to these guys for the hard work and to CBA. We left the door opened a crack and they slid in.”

A couple hard hit balls by CBA took weird bounces in that last inning, but Fuchs knows that’s just part of the game.

“We definitely had a couple tough breaks defensively,” Fuchs said. “We can’t complain. They are playing on the same field we are all playing on the same field. They had a couple breaks. They had a couple breaks go their way, a couple of those balls that were bouncing funny. They put their bat on the ball and made things happen.”

Aedan Palmer went 6 2/3 innings, striking out 11 and allowing eight hits and nine runs, just three earned. Logan Demember got the final out.

“Aedan threw a great game,’ Fuchs said. “He did exactly what we expected him to do. He let them put the ball in play. I think they hit one or two balls hard the whole game. They must have had five or six infield hits. He threw a great game. I couldn’t have asked for anything more. He put us in a chance to win. He did hist job.”

Offensively Elmira had eight hits in the game, but other than the six-run third inning they could only get one other run in the game. In the bottom of the seventh they got a lead-off double by Aiden Ranck, but weren’t able to bring him home.

That was disappointing,” Fuchs said. “A few times we had runners on and we couldn’t get the big hit to break the game open when we had the opportunities to get further ahead.

“There pitcher, the guy who closed for them, he threw a nice game. He threw a very nice game. He did what he needed to do. He threw strikes, he didn’t put runners on base. He put a lot of pressure on our hitters by pounding the zone.”

Cavalier had two hits, with the double, and two RBI and Palmer had two hits, and an RBI.

Hanrahan had a hit and scored two runs and Demember had a hit and scored a run.

Ranck had the double and Noah Cain had a hit and two RBI. Brock Carr, Frankie D’Angelo and Dom Ellis scored runs in the game and Logan Palmer had an RBI.
