ELMIRA — Former Horseheads coach Jeff Limoncelli started the 100 inning game fundraiser for the Josh Palmer Fund, and Friday the game continued, and took a step into the future, even after he has retired from coaching.

The game was scheduled to be played on Sunday, but was moved up due to the weather forecast this weekend.

This year the game also added softball to the mix as both the Horseheads and Elmira baseball teams and softball teams did 50 innings each.

“It was a great day,” Josh Palmer said. “Obviously a little bit of maneuvering with the weather, but I think the kids appreciate we got out here when it’s 70 and sunny out as well as the families. Continuing something that coach Limoncelli started many years ago and (former Elmira) coach (Jason) Manwaring was a big part of it. I think it was important for the community that we kept this going, even though both of them have retired. And, then obviously incorporating the softball this year was a big step for us as well.”

Adding softball this year is special as the fundraiser continues to grow.

“For a couple reasons,” Palmer said. “Obviously it makes it a little easier on the baseball, they aren’t doing all 100, it’s 50 and 50 so that certainly helps. It makes sense to have the softball involved as well. Our community this year has been struck by some people with cancer diagnosis’s, some people passing away on both sides of the community, the Horseheads side of the community and the Elmira side of the community. So, engaging the softball was a perfect time for us to do that and we are happy to have them.”

For Limoncelli he enjoys seeing the game continue on.

“It’s great to see this, we have a great day for it, I’m glad they are continuing on,” Limoncelli said. “I knew they would, great people with coach (Justin) Fuchs and obviously coach (Andy) Scott. When wee started this basketball does such a great job, we said why not our game? We will contribute as much as we can. We obviously aren’t going to raise the money like the basketball tournament does, but I thought it was a great thing for our kids to understand why we are here and put things into perspective.

“We are healthy enough to play this game and we are raising money for people in this community who are struggling. That’s the whole point of it, the whole cause of it and I’m glad it’s going to keep rolling.”
