SECTION 4 GIRLS' GOLF: HORSEHEADS SET TO OPEN SEASON ON FRIDAY (10 PHOTOS) (April 9, 2026)

Southern Tier Sports Report
HORSEHEADS — The long wait is over as the Horseheads golf team prepares to hit the course on Friday as they host Corning.

The Blue Raiders have strong numbers as they head into this year.

“I am excited,” Horseheads coach Christine Fischer said. “We have one returners from last year and we have built up to 11 girls on the team this year. It’s been a good week of practice, so it’s exciting to see what they’ll shape up to be.

“I’m very excited.” Fischer said. “We do have a mixture of grade levels, including some who are a little more seasoned in their play and others who are taking on the game a bit newer.”

The Blue Raiders have been waiting to get out on the course as the spring weather hasn’t been kind to golfers so far this year. And, they are excited for some good competition this season.

“Should be a good season of competition,” Fischer said. “Being in N.Y. we take a little while to get on the course, wait for the courses to open. But, as far as the season goes, I’m looking forward to the competition and I know the girls are excited for it.

“It’s the hardest part (the time spent waiting to get on the course). I keep telling them be patient. That’s a part of the game of golf. Fortunately we are practicing, as much as we’d like to be outside (all practices long), we are taking advantage of the space we have.”
