MYRTLE BEACH — The Horseheads baseball team was edged 4-3 by the No. 14 ranked team in the nation, Archbishop Moeller of Ohio on Tuesday.

Mason Markle kept the NO. 14 team int he country at bay for six innings. He gave up three runs on four hits, striking out 10.

Horseheads led 3-2 after six. Moeller tied it and walked it off in the seventh.

Cooper Ball was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Ryan Cicciarelli scored two runs. Carson Bell doubled and scored a run.

Kentucky commit Matt Ponatonski struck out seven in three innings of work for Archbishop Moeller.

“I was really proud of the compete level of our guys,” Horseheads coach Andy Scott said. “You look at a top 20 ranked team in the country and many teams would be intimidated. But, these guys played with energy and passion and competed the whole game. Just got unlucky at the end.

“Mason Markle was on JV last year and he turned some heads today. His growth has been amazing. I thought he put us in a great spot to win. I’m not much for moral victories, but this shows we can compete with anyone. This will make us better for when it’s important.”
