IAC SOFTBALL: WHEELER GETS 100TH CAREER STRIKEOUT, WALK-OFF HIT AS EDISON TOPS LANSING IN 9 (24 PHOTOS) (April 6, 2026)
BY BRIAN FEESSouthern Tier Sports ReportHORSEHEADS — Rosie Wheeler got her 100th career strikeout, and also had the walk-off hit in the 9th inning as the Edison softball team edged Lansing 12-11.
In a back-and-forth game the Spartans got two runs in the ninth to win things.
“We worked very hard in the cold and we did it,” Wheeler said. “We are very happy.”
For Wheeler earlier in the day she reached a milestone with her 100th career strikeout, coming on her sixth K of the game. Wheeler finished with 11 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.
“It was so long, I feel like I have been here for a day,” Wheeler said of the game.
The Edison softball was mobbed by her teammates after the 100th strikeout.
“I love them so much,” she said. “I didn’t know that’s a thing. They are so supportive and I can’t ask for a better team.”
Lansing scored in the top of the first, and Edison answered in the bottom half of the inning.
The Spartans went up 3-1 in the second, but Lansing scored the next two innings to tie the game.
Edison got two more in the bottom of the fourth to go up 5-3 and it stayed that way into the sixth inning.
In the sixth Lansing got a run to get within 5-4, before Edison scored four in the bottom half of the inning to go up 9-4.
Lansing scored six in the top of the seventh to take their first lead since the first inning at 10-9. Edison tied things in the bottom half of the inning.
Lansing got a two-out, full-count hit in the top of the ninth to take a 11-10 lead, before Edison fought back.
Hailey Clark led off the inning with a hit, and scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 11.
Aurora Parlo reached base and then Wheeler came up with the game-winning, walk-off hit.
“I was just thinking don’t swing out of your shoes,” Wheeler said. “Get on base. But, don’t try too hard. If I try too hard I’m going to whiff it. I was trying not to get in my head.”
The ball hit the ground and bounced past the Lansing outfielder, and Wheeler was excited to win the game.
“So excited, that was the best hit I have had in a while,” Wheeler said.
Not only did the hit win the game, but it got the team out of the freezing cold. The temperature had dropped through the night and the rain had come in for a couple innings later in the game.
“I want to go home,” Wheeler said. “It’s really hard because you can’t feel your hands. You have to make your mind think it’s not cold, but it is cold. You can’t think about it.”
Tayler Burdick and Wheeler each had three hits. Wheeler had two doubles, two RBI and a run scored and Burdick scored a run.
Clark, Kayla Rossi and Carissa Cowan all had two hits in the game. Clark had a double and scored a run and Cowan had a double and scored three runs, while Rossi had an RBI and a run scored.
Teresa Carter and Cierra Davis each had hits in the game. Carter had a double, two RBI and three runs scored and Davis had three RBI.
Parlo scored two runs, including the winning run in the game.
Clark struck out three in 2 1/3 innings of relief for the Spartans.
