ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Elmira College men's lacrosse team hosted the Hawks of Hilbert College for a Saturday afternoon matchup at Campus Field. The Soaring Eagles got hat tricks from Austin Jerzak, Corbin Melie, and John McLachlan, in a winning effort over Hilbert, 12-10.

PLAY-BY-PLAY

The Hawks responded over the next twelve minutes, scoring four consecutive goals and taking a 4-1 advantage over EC. The Soaring Eagles responded about 40 seconds later when Corbin Melie beat the goalie to make the score 4-2.

Corbin Melie scored again, this time right before the first period expired to put Elmira within one goal. At the end of the first period the Hawks led 4-3, while the Soaring Eagles led 8-5 in shots on goal. Elmira's momentum continued two minutes into the second period when Jerzak scored again, this time unassisted, to even up the score at four each. The Hawks responded 40 seconds later to retake the advantage 5-4. EC wasted no time evening up the score again, as John McLachlan scored a minute later, unassisted. Jerzak scored again, giving the Soaring Eagles their first advantage since early in the contest, this time receiving a pass from McLachlan. McLachlan kept the offensive momentum a few minutes later, taking a pass from Owen Halloran, and beating the keeper to make the score 7-5 EC.

Hilbert responded with a goal of their own, as the match went into halftime, the Soaring Eagles in front 7-6. Shots on goal in the second period were 5-3 Soaring Eagles.

Hilbert opened the second half with a pair of goals to give them an 8-7 advantage. EC answered two minutes later when Jerzak netted his fourth goal of the match, assisted by Melie, his second, to even up the score at eight and halt the Hawks momentum. Hilbert responded with eight minutes remaining in the third, taking advantage of being a man-up, to take a 9-8 lead.

Two minutes later, Jerzak responded with his fifth goal of the contest, also unassisted, to bring the game back to tied. Corbin Melie kept things rolling for the Soaring Eagles, finding the back of the net on a shot, assisted by McLachlan to move EC in front 10-9. McLachlan added another, his third of the game, with five seconds left in the third period to extend the advantage to 11-9.

EC led the third period with eight shots on goal to four for Hilbert. Hilbert opened the final period by scoring a goal 30 seconds in, cutting the EC advantage to just one goal. Elmira took advantage of being a man-up with six minutes remaining, Brody Haynes beating the keeper, assisted by McLachlan, to provide an important insurance goal.
