IAC BASEBALL: SMALLER NUMBERS, BUT TALENTED PLAYERS HAVE EDISON EXCITED FOR SEASON (12 PHOTOS) (March 26, 2026)

Southern Tier Sports Report
ELMIRA HEIGHTS — The Edison baseball team is back to work preparing to kick off their season next week.

“I’m excited,” Edison coach Chris Bennett said. “I look forward to it every year and when it’s here the guys they are just as excited as I am so it makes it real easy.”

Spring practices started with some warm weather. Things cooled off after that, but the nice weather to begin practices helped the team prep for the year.

“We got out a couple days and did some fielding, some work out there, some fly balls,” Bennett said. “The first few days were busy with JV tryouts. We got back in the gym because the weather turned on us, but there is lots of work to be done either place.”

The Spartans are young, but have a strong group of players with big expectations.

“We are young again, but the guys we do have are pretty good baseball players, so I’m excited for that. I have Nico (Cheplick) coming back for his senior year so I have one senior. Nico is a pretty good players and a good leader, so I’m excited to see what we can do and bring these young guys along fast. We have three upperclassmen and we only have 10 players this year. So, our numbers are down at the varsity level, but the 10 guys I have are pretty good baseball players. Not power numbers, but power in ability this year for the Spartans so we are excited to get back out there and defend our division championship, and hopefully we can win an IAC crown.

“it’s been a couple years since we have done that. We always set goals to start the season. The first goal is to win the first game. The second is to win the division and the third is the IAC Championship and then always we want to qualify for the postseason and try and get over the hump in Class B. We have been up in Class B a couple years now. We were in a tough game with Oneonta a couple years ago and last year Waverly, they put it on us pretty good. It’s building up to get over that hump and beat an Oneonta or beat a Waverly so that’s what these guys are working for to get over the hump and get in the sectional final. That’s the goal. We are excited, we are working hard and we are ready for the task.”
