STAC BASEBALL: NEW YEAR, NEW COACH FOR EXPERIENCED ELMIRA BASEBALL TEAM (12 PHOTOS) (March 19, 2026)
Southern Tier Sports ReportELMIRA — Coming off a sectional title a year ago the Elmira Express baseball team is back to work preparing for a new season, with a new coach.
Justin Fuchs moves over from coaching JV to take over a team that returns a big group of seniors.
“We have been getting after it for quite a while now inside,” Justin Fuchs said. “So, we are ready to get after it, hit it so hopefully the weather cooperates and we can go outside and get things tuned up for the end of March and get the season started.
“We have a lot of experienced players, a lot of skilled players. Not going to do any wholesale changes, just going to tune things and fine tune things.”
The big group of returners helps make the transition to a new coach easier.
“It’s nice because I had most of these guys in the last couple of years,” Fuchs said. “Both of our assistants are super familiar with this group as well and both guys came through the program here at Elmira, so they know how we do things so that’s an awesome thing to have.”
One of those assistants, Owen Demember, is ultra familiar with the senior class, which includes his brother, Logan.
“He’s got one shot at that (to coach his brother who is a senior), so hopefully we can go all the way,” Fuchs said.
With so much back from a sectional championship team the team has high hopes this year.
“there are a lot of high expectations,” Fuchs said. “We expect a lot from ourselves and these boys are super prepared and they are ready to work and do what we’ve got to do to finish the season on top.”
With seven seniors already signed to college it takes some pressure off that group and lets them just focus on the season.
“Hopefully it takes a lot of pressure off these guys and they can play lose and focus on the day to day stuff and not worry about next year,” Fuchs said.
