SECTION 4 FLAG FOOTBALL: HORSEHEADS ENJOYS NICE WEATHER AS THEY BEGIN PRACTICES FOR NEW SEASON (12 PHOTOS) (March 10, 2026)
Southern Tier Sports ReportHORSEHEADS — It was a perfect start for the first week of practice for the Horseheads flag football team.
With warm weather the Blue Raiders hit the turf on Monday to prepare for a new season.
“It was nice,” Horseheads coach Kevin Hillman said. “It was a cold, long winter, so it was nice to get back out here. I’m sure we’ll get some cold days after this, but it’s awesome to be back out here.
“It does get you excited. If it was like negative 20 or whatever right now I would be like I want to go hoe. But, this is awesome. The kids are excited. We are excited. Can’t wait.”
Horseheads has big numbers as they head into the season.
“We have a good turnout this year,” Hillman said. “We have some new kids, we are going to be a little young in that we got a lot of inexperience because we graduated a lot of girls last year. But, I think we’ve got some new girls, some athletic girls. Hopefully we can get some things going during the season and by the end of the year we are going to be a tough team.”
The strong numbers are a positive sign for the future of the program.
“We are hoping by next year we’ll have a modified team,” Hillman said. “We have a JV team this year. We are trying to keep some numbers up if we can so we have some seventh and eighth graders who come up so that way we can kind of get those modified girls to have an early head start if we can keep some and go from there. It’s awesome. Hopefully we can keep growing this thing. You can see it’s expanded, a lot of colleges have picked it up. I think you are going to see this thing explode.”
