A RECORD-BREAKING NIGHT: CORNING'S PROUDFOOT HITS FOR SCHOOL-RECORD 50 AS HAWKS STAY UNBEATEN (24 PHOTOS) (February 2, 2026)
BY BRIAN FEESSouthern Tier Sports ReportCORNING — Nolyn Proudfoot scored 50 points, breaking his own school record, as the Corning Hawks moved to 15-0 on the year with a 97-78 win over state-ranked Canisteo-Greenwood on Monday night.
Proudfoot had 50 points and seven boards. He broke his own school record that he set one game earlier when he scored 42 points against Oneonta.
“Going into the game I told myself I have to be locked in,” Proudfoot said. “I was and I ended up coming out performing. I came out and I was different tonight.”
Proudfoot didn’t feel great when he first came out before the game, but as warmups continued he got red hot making threes from the corner and was able to continue that into the game.
“At first when I came out I have been struggling with a back issue the past couple of weeks,” Proudfoot said. “My first couple of shots I was like oww. Then, as soon as I was shooting from the corner everything was falling. I have been doing a really nice job playing against the zone and finding those openings. My mid-range is deadly.”
The rebounding has been a big key for Proudfoot as it’s led to some easy baskets as well.
“Realy big thing I have stepped up with,” Proudfoot said. “I have been lifting with a guy from Iona Prep, he’s the track and field coach there. I’m getting up there much easier and grabbing the rebound right out of the rim. I’ve been doing a really good job with that, just crashing the boards.”
The 50 points puts Proudfoot over 1,500 for his career, in just his sophomore year.
“It’s a really cool thing,” Proudfoot said. “I don’t really pay attention to the numbers too much. I’m just coming out every game and playing my hardest, putting it on for my teammates, helping my teammates and just winning games is just the glory of it all and it’s just really great what’s going on right now.”
While 50 is a magical number, it’s also more points than Proudfoot’s dad, Kevin, scored in his high school career. Proudfoot’s last game of 42 was just short of the most his dad had scored.
“Not only was it the school record, but my dad, who went to school in Pennsylvania, I went past his scoring record of 43,” Nolyn Proudfoot said. “He was really proud of me. I knew he said to me (after the 42-point game), God you still didn’t get my record. I knew going into that day I had the same mindset and it turned out how it turned out.”
Corning is ranked 27th in the state. Canisteo-Greenwood (12-3) is ranked fourth in the state in Class B.
The Hawks jumped out to a 55-40 lead at the half in the win.
Proudfoot was 19-for-26 from the field and 5-for-8 from three in the win. He was 7-for-9 from the charity stripe in the game and had three assists and two steals.
Kyler Stevenson had 18 points and four rebounds and Kohl Hogue had a big double-double with 17 points, 11 assists, five boards and two steals in the game.
“The past couple of games he’s been averaging about 13 assists a game,” Proudfoot said of Hogue. “He can do it all, he can score, he has length, he can rebound. 11 assists, I’m pretty sure 13 assists the other night. He’s really been doing his thing.
“He’s always going to find me, we get out, we get the ball ahead. A lot of times I’m open and we have really great passiers. We are really great moving the ball.”
Carter Proudfoot had 10 points, three assists, three rebounds and four steals and Teigen Gill had two points and six assists, with a rebound.
The balance that Corning has makes it hard for teams to key on Proudfoot.
“It’s tough,” Proudfoot said. “Tonight they were sitting in a zone, they would get me the ball in the corner and we had guys open everywhere. Kyler can hit anything and Teigen is a knock down shooter. Carter, I think is one of the best shooters in the STAC and Kohl Hogue it’s the same thing, he’s going to knock them down.”
Kevin Sirianni led Canisteo-Greenwood with 23 points and Carson Chaffee had 18 points. Chaffee is the all-time leading scorer for Canisteo-Greenwood’s basketball program.
Jack Beers had 13 points for Canister and James Smith III had 11 points.
As special as the win was, Proudfoot knows there is always work for the Hawks to do to keep improving.
“Everybody looks at the score and they were like Corning is fun to watch,” Proudfoot said. “I had some mental lapses, some of my teammates had mental lapses. We are known for playing fast. I thought tonight we gave up some open points.”
Corning returns home Wednesday to host Union-Endicott with a 7:15 p.m. start.
One of the things that makes the school record even more special for Proudfoot is that it comes during a 15-0 start to the year.
“Last year we had a couple tough losses, now is the time where we still stay where we are going and not let U-E come in (on Wednesday) and get an easy one,” Proudfoot said. “This is the biggest game of the year because it’s the next one.”
