ELMIRA — The Elmira Express girls’ basketball team was edged by Susquehanna Valley on Friday, 57-55. 

Facing the fourth-ranked Class B team in the state, the Express had a shot at the end to tie, or wn the gae. 

“Tough game, and a really competitive battle between two good teams,” Elmira coach A’Don Allen said. “We fought for 32 minutes and put ourselves in position at the end, with a last-second opportunity to tie or win, but it just didn’t fall our way.

“Proud of the fight and the growth. We’ll learn from it, keep grinding, and keep getting better.”

The game was tied after one quarter and Elmira led 30-28 at the half. Susquehanna Valley outscored the Express 17-11 in the third to lead 45-41 in the fourth. 

Mariah Matias and Ava Roberts each had 12 points for Elmira and Meya Smith finished with 10 points. All of Roberts points came on four threes. 

Avery McCauley had eight points for the Express and Tamaiah Brown finished with six points. 

Abbi Valicanti and Zhamir Harris each finished with two points. Ava Kariam had 27 points for Susquehanna Valley.
