STAC BOYS' BASKETBALL: CORNING RALLIES PAST ELMIRA TO STAY UNBEATEN (24 PHOTOS) (January 17, 2026)
BY BRIAN FEESSouthern Tier Sports ReportCORNING — Corning trailed at the half, but rallied for a 71-59 win over Elmira in a STAC showdown on Saturday to move to 11-0 on the year.
Corning, ranked 30th in Class AAA in the state, will play at 7:30 p.m. next Friday at Wellsville.
Elmira led 16-13 after one quarter. It was 30-28 with a second left in the half when Karim Woodard hit a 3/4 court shot to put the Express up. 33-28 at the break.
Corning outscored Elmira 43-26 in the second half to pick up the win.
“It’s definitely great,” Corning’s Nolyn Proudfoot said of the win. “We just came off a really tough game at Ithaca’s place. We knew we had hoe court advantage, but still a really tough team, they were missing a couple of their stars.
“I feel like the common trend with the teams we play, they come off to a fast start, and then we wear them down and get them in the fourth quarter. But, we definitely have some room for improvement starting out.”
Corning’s players were happy with the way the team closed out the game.
“Close game at the beginning, but came out in the end,” Kyler Stevenson said. “We have room for improvement, but we play defense. That’s our thing, we wear teams out.”
Proudfoot had a double-double to lead Corning. He had 26 points, going 10-for-15 from the field, and he had 14 rebounds, with two assists.
While Proudfoot had a big game on the boards, he still thinks he could have done an even better job of boxing out in the game.
“It was really good, one thing I felt like I could have done better was boxing out,” Proudfoot said. “We come out eveyr night and play as hard as we can.”
Stevenson had 18 points, five boards, two steals and an assist and Kohl Hogue had 16 points, with six boards and three assists. Carter Proudfoot had 10 points, with three boards, three assists and two steals.
Corning had four players in double figures, and that balanced scoring has been a key for the Hawks this year.
“The past few years Corning has been typically small ball, and everyone can score,” Proudfoot said. “Carter, he’s made a big leap, Kohl Hogue, everyone can get it done.
“We’ve got scorers everywhere, so there’s not a guy we can’t throw it too.”
The Hawks know that at 11-0 on the year they are getting everyone’s best shot, every game.
“Everybody is going to come out and play their best game, we have to stay level headed,” Proudfoot said.
Teigen Gill had one point, five assists, four steals and three boards for the Hawks.
Woodard led Elira with 17 points and five boards.
Zach Conklin finished with 14 points and seven boards and Baby Harris had 13 points.
Dash Harris and Jeremy Roberson each had six points and Drew Clearwater finished with three points.
