CORNING — The Corning Hawks got off to a fast start as they picked up a 63-56 win over Elmira on Friday night.

“Kudos to Corning, they had a great game plan tonight,” Elmira coach A’Don Allen said. “They played extremely well as a team and they deserve this win.”

Char Starns led four Corning players in double figures with 18 points.

Aubrey Rose haed 12 points, Evelyn Starns finished with 11 and Kennedy Driscoll added 10 points.

Deana Shaddock had nine points in the game and Grace Kio finished with two points, while Katie Grover had a point. 

Elmira led 15-13 after one quarter, but a 21-point second quarter had Corning up 34-21 at the half as they held on for the victory. 

Meya Smith had 23 points and Mariah Matias finished with 22 for Elmira.

ZyAsiha Cade, Elizabeth Hunter and Ava Roberts all had three points and Osborne finished with two for Elmira. 

Matias had all but two of her points in the first and fourth quarters. She had 12 points in the opening quarter. 

Smith finished with 17 in the second half for Elmira. 

Char Starns had eight points in the big second quarter and Driscoll had six in the quarter as the Corning defense led to a number of fast break layups in the quarter for the Hawks.
