HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' BASKETBALL: HORSEHEADS GIRLS RALLY TO TOP WAVERLY IN PALMER THIRD-PLACE GAME (December 30, 2025)

Southern Tier Sports Report
ELMIRA — The Horseheads girls’ basketball team moved to 6-1 on the year with a 50-43 win over Waverly at the Josh Palmer Fund Holiday Classic in the national third-place game.

“Waverly came out and beat us up in the first half,” Horseheads coach Andy Scott said. “Our girls rallied and dug in defensively in the second half. Very proud of their effort. The girls had three hard-fought games the last four days and gave every ounce of energy that they could.

“Waverly played very hard and is going to be a problem for a lot of teams going forward. Coach (Bob) Kelly does a great job.”

Freshman Sam Bonnell had 23 points and Maggie Tremaine had 13 points, while Giana Hughey finished with 10 points.

Mya Piecuch had two points and Ellie Jankowski and Sadie Gustin each had one point.

Waverly led 17-14 after one quarter and they were up 31-21 at the half, before Horseheads held them to 12 second-half points.

Ryleigh Judson had 15 points for Waverly and Kaitlyn Sutton had 12 points.
