HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' BASKETBALL: ELMIRA EDGES WAVERLY TO REACH FINAL AT PALMER TOURNEY (December 29, 2025)

ELMIRA — The Elmira girls’ basketball team edged Waverly 44-41 on Monday at the Josh Palmer Fund Holiday Classic to make the championship game in the girls’ national division. 

Mariah Matias led Elmira with 17 points, one game after recording 26 points and 26 rebounds in the opener of the tournament.

Ava Roberts had 12 points and Avery McCauley finished with seven points, while Meya Smith had six points.

Matis had eight of the 13 opening quarter points for Elmira.

The game was tied at 13 after one quarter, and both teams had 11 in the third, while Waverly outscored Elmira by one in the fourth 12-11. The difference was the second quarter when Elmira’s defense held the Wolverines to five points, outscoring them 9-5.

Ryleigh Judson led Waverly with 10 points, going 6-for-6 from the line and KaylinTwedt had nine points, while Mackenzie Olmstead had eight points.
