SECTION 4 GIRLS' BASKETBALL: HORSEHEADS HOLDS ON FOR WIN IN MATCHUP OF SECTIONAL CHAMPS TO KICKOFF SEASON (12 PHOTOS) (December 6, 2025)
Southern Tier Sports ReportELMIRA — The Horseheads girls’ basketball team held on for a 36-34 win over Nottingham to start the season at the Elmira College Tip-Off Showcase.
Horseheads led 12-2 after one quarter and 23-8 at the half, before Nottingham outscored the Blue Raiders 26-10 in the second half.
The game was a matchup of sectional champs last year as Horseheads won the Class AA Section IV title and Nottingham won the Section 3 Class AA crown.
Horseheads led the whole way. A three by Nottingham’s Keymora Woods cut the deficit to one with 30 seconds left.
Samantha Bonnell hit a free throw to make it a two-point game, and the Blue Raiders defense held strong as Nottingham had the ball with 10.7 seconds left, but only got off a last second heave.
Bonnell had 11 points for Horseheads.
Sadie Gustin had six points, all in the third quarter, and Maddie Ribble and Gianna Hughey each had five points.
Maggie Tremaine, Ellie Jankowski and Mya Piecuch had three points each.
Woods (20) and Justyce Moore (14) had all 34 of the Nottingham points between them.
