ELMIRA HEIGHTS — After eight years coaching the girls’ basketball team, Chris Mallette is back on the boys’ side coaching the Spartans’ boys this year.

“It’s always exciting (getting ready for a season),” Mallette said. “Nervous energy, but it’s gone well so far. I had the girls for eight years, so it’s back to the boys. I did the JV’s before, so I knew what I was getting into.”

The team has had good energy as they have headed into the season.

“The energy has been unbelievable,” Mallette said. “The kids have been having fun. We have been learning together. Unfortunately we lost our best player (Ze’Quan Mosley) to an ACL tear, but we will figure it out as we go.”

Things are a bit different this year for Mallette with the boys program.

“It’s a little bit different,” Mallette said. “I can be a little harder on the boys. I miss my seniors (from the girls team). They are a good group of girls. I will still be around watching them when I can.”

The Spartans have struggled for wins in recent years. They hope to improve this year, but are also looking into the future.

“Just trying to get back to competitive basketball,” Mallette said. “The last time we won a sectional game I was a senior. That’s the goal, but honestly it’s going to take a little time to get there.

“The JV’s did pretty well last year and I have a bunch of them up. It’s kind of two timelines right now. I’m trying to do as well as we can. But, I’m young on the varsity. We’ll have Ze’Quan back next year and then I have 4-5 kids that are pretty good on the JV team and both mod teams are doing well right now, so we are set up for the future.”
