SECTION 4 WRESTLING: EDISON GEARS UP FOR SEASON WITH STRONG ROSTER (15 PHOTOS) (December 1, 2025)
BY BRIAN FEESSouthern Tier Sports ReportELMIRA HEIGHTS — With solid numbers the Edison wrestling team heads into the new season as they got back to practices preparing to begin the year on Saturday.
“Excited, it’s always fun to start the year off, start the season off,” Edison coach Kevin Weber said. “Get the fresh faces in the room and then the returners and stuff and kind of getting the feel of the room, the feel of the team, everyone meshing together finding out what kind of group it’s goind to be.”
The tea has strong boys numbers, and have three girls this year as well.
“We have 14 boys right now and we actually have three females who are looking to do a girls schedule this year,” Weber said. “Not necessarily their own team per se, but no mixed competition so they’ll be doing their own schedule and starting to try and build that. For the boys we have a solid group of 14. A couple of newbies, a lot of young kids and then some of our tough guys back from last year.”
The one returning girl is Abigail Johnson, who missed last year as she’s been battling cancer.
“One that has worked very hard to have this opportunity this year and is still working very hard to make sure she’s healthy and can have this chance,” Weber said of Johnson.
On the boys side the team has some strong returners, like sectional place-winner Greg Golden, and some newcomers, including Mason Vanderhoff who made states and won 27 matches as an eighth-grader at Horseheads a year ago.
“WE have Greg returning, placing at sectionals,” Weber said. “Jace Schiller is one of our strong returners and we have a couple freshmen, transfers, coming in from eighth grade, who also have quite a bit of experience through the juniors and stuff like that. So, we’ll have a good, strong group through the weights.”
