CORNING — With a new coach the Corning Hawks girls’ basketball team got on the court last week to begin practices for the new season.

“It feels great to be on the court and building momentum for the season,” Corning coach Alexis Wood said. “There’s a real sense of energy and focus during practices, everyone is hungry to improve and excited to see how far we can go. Getting into that routine again, competing, and pushing each other has brought a lot of positivity to the group.”

For Wood taking over was made easier by having a veteran team that’s helped out a lot.

“Taking over this group has been a smooth transition because so many of the players are familiar with each other and with what we’re trying to accomplish,” Wood said. “Having returners who already know the culture, expectations, and system makes a huge difference. The upperclassmen are setting the tone for the younger players and help create a strong, unified environment. Their experience gives us a solid foundation to build on rather than starting from scratch.”

The Hawks come into team with a a roster that looks capable of big things.

“The roster looks balanced, competitive, and full of potential,” Wood said. “We have a good mix of returning leaders and developing players who bring a lot of enthusiasm. You could feel the excitement from day one, everyone showed up ready to work, ready to learn, and ready to compete. Their energy has made practices intense in the best way, and it’s clear that they’re committed to having a strong season.”
