SECTION 4 CROSS COUNTRY: ND'S MEIER EARNS REPEAT TRIP TO STATES (24 PHOTOS) (2025-11-06)
BY BRIAN FEESSouthern Tier Sports ReportCHENANGO VALLEY — Notre Dame’s Gavin Meier knew that if he wanted to get back to states he’d have to have a big day.
That’s exactly what the junior had, as he finished sixth in the Class D race at the Section IV Championships at Chenango Valley State Park, earning a spot in the state meet.
“I came into the races as the 10th seed,” Meier said. “I knew I was going to have to do some work. the last mile I knew I had to be all out and coming into the last 1000 I knew I had to beat the last guy.”
The Notre Dame junior ran right with the person he had to beat for the last spot at states, and then late in the race he made his move.
“I wanted to be right behind him, make my move and break him when I could,” Meier said. I felt amazing (at the end). All my training, I felt like it finally paid off and I felt good the last kick.”
The Crusaders star runner knew he had to have a strong race if he wanted to get back to states.
“It’s a lot harder this year, a lot more great runners, a lot of runners got faster,” he said. “So, I knew it was going to be tough, but the confidence from last year certainly helped.”
And, the conditions weren’t perfect for the race.
“It was pretty slippery the whole way through,” Meier said. “It’s a gold course, it kind of turned into a little slip and slide. But, I just had to know where the right places to run, and not do any crazy moves in the wrong places.”
Now, it’s back to states, and Meier is hoping to try and bring home a state medal this year.
“I’m ready to get back there and get my medal,” he said. “I’m grateful I can be there and I’m just going to try and compete at the highest level.”
Cameron Kraft finished 37th for the Crusaders in 20:35.80. Burke Hilgindorf finished 54th in 21:40. Robert Sharp was 64th in 22:34.80. Trevor Agan was 93rd in 24:38.20 and Johnny Piet was 101st in 25:34.80. Sergio Condo was 104th in 26:31.
Lylie Colunio was 66th for the girls in 28:25 and Lillian Moore was 83rd in 35:24.40.
