SECTION 4 EIGHT-MAN FOOTBALL: COMING OFF MAGICAL SEASON, SPARTANS HOPE FOR MORE THIS YEAR (2025-09-12)
Southern Tier Sports ReportELMIRA HEIGHTS — Coming off one of the best seasons in program history the Edison football team prepares for a new season Saturday as they host Morrisville-Eaton.
The Spartans open the year with a 1:30 p.m. game against Morrisville-Eaton. Morrisville-Eaton had a weak zero game against Frankfort-Schuyler, which they dropped 20-18.
“Us as a team, we are excited,” Edison coach Kyle Erickson said of the new season. “We are coming off one of our best seasos in a very long time. Last season we had our first winning season in 15 years. First time making the playoffs in 17, so our 18 players out here are excited to get the season going. WE are ready to build on what we did last year. This season we want to make the playoffs again, build on what we did last year.”
The Spartans have a number of returning players, mixed with some new faces to begin the year.
“We are good, we graduated eight seniors, we had 17 on the team last year, we have 18 this year,” Erickson said. “We graduated eight seniors, graduated our entire offensive line, so we have a lot of work to do there. We still have some key players back, we had a couple move into the district that are going to help us out. We are excited and ready to play, we are going to be about six seniors, decent amount of juniors, sophomores.
“We have Marcus Bradley, who played with us his sophomore year and his family moved to California, he’s back this year. We have Za’Quan Mosley, who didn’t play football last year, but joined the team this year and we expect will help a lot. We have one freshman, Ethan Barrett, coming up on the offensive line and we expect him to have an impact on the offensive and defensive lines right off the jump street as a freshman. Greg Golden, two time all-state honorable mention in eight-man is back for his senior year and Jace Schiller, who was kind of our Swiss army knife last year, played some quarterback, played some tailback, played some wide receiver. He is slotting into be our quarterback replacing Drew Slaven.”
Like most teams in eight-man Edison isn’t huge in numbers, but they are similar to last year.
“Just excited, have a good group of kids,” Erickson said. “Got some new guys, new to football. Like most of us in eight-man, we are struggling for numbers. Going to be about 17-18 this year, right where we were last year.”
