NEW COACH, NEW SEASON FOR HORSEHEADS GIRLS' TENNIS (24 PHOTOS) (2025-08-18)
Southern Tier Sports ReportHORSEHEADS — With a new coach, the Horseheads girls’ tennis team hit the courts on Monday for the opening day of fall sports practices.
Doug Jacobs takes over as the new coach, with help from Jack Masker.
“It feels great,” Jacobs said. “I grew up playing tennis. “My dad was a great tennis player in the Elmira League. That’s back when they had the Elmira Industrial League and companies used to have these, it’s kind of like the golf leagues that are still around, but there was an elaborate tennis league so I grew up playing on Ridge Road Elementary Courts. So my dad at 5 years old, full size rackets, there were no junior rackets at that time, he would just literally say hit back hands to me, so I learned all the terms, I learned to hit to a spot and I did that all my younger years and then I started playing the contact team sports. But tennis was always really fun for me. It was really a thing I could do with my dad. Dan Palmer is a good friend of mine, Dustin McCullough is a good friend of mine. I get along with them great and I always appreciated this program, how stable it was, how well run it was.”
For Jacobs, he wants to be able to continue that stability within the Horseheads program.
The numbers are strong for the Blue Raiders as they prepare for the season.
“It’s great to see, as a matter of fact, we have Jack here, because I think we need an assistant with the numbers we do have,” Jacobs said. ‘And, in today’s day and age just anything that will get people drawn into something physical it’s great to see.”
