THE SPORTS REPORTS: NOTRE DAME'S ALVAREZ-SOSTRES NAMED ALL-REGION 'TENNIS PLAYER OF YEAR,' HORSEHEADS, CORNING ALSO REPRESENTED IN 'SUPER 7' (2025-07-17)

Francisco Alvarez-Sostres made States this year and now he headlines
The Sports Reports’ Super 7 Boys’ All-Region Boys Tennis team as "
Player of the Year."
Alvarez-Sostres was a third-place finisher at the Section IV State qualifier.
The
first-singles player for Notre Dame went undefeated with a 10-0 record
in the regular season. In those 10 matches, he lost just one set.
At
the IAC Championships at Newark Valley, he won the first singles
bracket with three matches wins, and lost just two games over those
three matches.
At the Section IV West tournament at Newark
Valley, he finished at the first seed in first singles after three
victories. He took third at the Section IV Championships to make it to
States. This tournament features athletes from all class sizes and the
Notre Dame standout was able to top kids from bigger schools along the
way. He beat a player from Union-Endicott in the third-place match.
Overall, he finished 20-3 on the season.
Mason Brill of Wellsboro was 14-1 on the year as Wellsboro’s number three player and he was 6-0 in NTL play. He is the "Newcomer of the Year."
Alvarez-Sostres
and Brill are on the "Super 7" all-star team along with
Baylee Poll of
Towanda, who was the "NTL Player of the Year" and was undefeated in the
league. He went 11-3 on the year and made the District 4 quarterfinals.
Felipe Silva
is another player from Spain for Notre Dame and he went undefeated in
the regular season in IAC play. He won the second singles title at the
IAC Championship. He finished the year 13-1.
Owego’s Sam Byer was 3-1 in the sectional tournament to take third in Class B. He was a Central All-Division pick.
Dominic Wood of Horseheads and
Djordjie Marjanovic of Corning round out the "Super 7."
Wood was 6-2 in singles this year and made the finals of the Class A sectionals doubles tourney.
Marjanovic was 5-4 in singles for Corning and was 2-1 in doubles.
