HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' GOLF: CORNING'S ABEL TIED FOR THE LEAD AFTER DAY ONE OF STATE GOLF (2025-06-08)

Southern Tier Sports Report
RUSH — Corning’s Delaney Abel is tied for the lead after day one of the New York State Girls’ Golf Championship at Wild Wood Country Club.

Abel shot a round of two-under 70 on the first day of the state championships. She is tied with Nina Chow of Ursuline.

Abel shot a 36 on the front nine and a 34 on the back nine. She had four birdies and two bogeys on the day. She had birdies on holes eight, nine and 10 and also on 18.

“I am very excited about having a share of the lead, but there is still a long way to go and a lot of great talent in this field,” Abel said.

Corning coach Chris Clark was happy with how the freshman played on Sunday.

“Delaney had a phenomenal day today, and I think the most noticeable thing for me was she hit some bad shots, but maturity took over and she quickly forgot about them.

“Her game was in a great spot today and even when things weren’t perfect she took it in stride, focused on the next shot, and went right back to playing great golf.”

Notre Dame’s Evelyn Wheeler is tied for 81st with a round of 103 on Sunday, while teammate Emma Steed is tied for 92nd after a round of 108.

Abel tees off on hole 1A on Monday at 8 a.m. Wheeler tees off on hole 15A and Steed tees off on 17A.
