HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS: NOTRE DAME'S ALVAREZ-SOSTRES COMPETING AT STATE TENNIS THIS WEEKEND (2025-06-06)
Southern Tier Sports ReportNotre Dame sophomore Francisco Serrano Alvarez-Sostres is competing at the 2025 New York State boys’ tennis championship this weekend.
Alvarez-Sostres was a third place finisher at the recent Section IV state qualifier tournament
This season the sophomore from Madrid, Spain was the first singles player for Notre Dame and went 10-0 during regular season play. During those 10 matches he only lost one set.
At the IAC Championships at Newark Valley he won the first singles bracket with three wins and lost two games over those three matches.
At the Section IV West Tournament at Newark Valley finished as the first seed in singles after three victories in the singles bracket.
At the East/West crossover tournament he took third after losing the semifinal match against Windsor, but winning the third-place match against Lansing.
He won the A3/C3 match against Corning to advance into the state qualifier bracket. In his second match he lost a close match in three sets to the first place finisher in Class B from Vestal IN his third match of the day, after two tough matches, he found a way to defeat the Section IV champion from Delhi to advance to the next round.
He beat a player from Maine-Endwell in straight sets to get into the third-place match, which determined who made states. His opponent was the Class A runner-up from Union-Endicott, and after a three-set battle that started outdoors, but had to finish indoors due to rain, Alvarez-Sostres won third place to head to New York City to compete at states at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center
Overall his record this year is 20-2 going into states.
