SECTION 4 TRACK AND FIELD: CORNING GIRLS WIN TITLE AT STATE QUALS, HAWKS MAKE STATES IN 8 EVENTS (17 PHOTOS) (2025-06-05)
Southern Tier Sports ReportENDICOTT — The Corning girls brought home the title at the Section IV state qualifier on Thursday at Union-Endicott High School as Corning qualified for states in eight events on the day.
Corning had a team score of 69. Lansing was second at 45. Horseheads was eighth at 28, Edison tied for 15th with 12, Notre Dame was 23rd with six and Elmira was 27th with three points.
For the boys Corning was third at 43. Ithaca won at 53, followed by Vestal (48). Horseheads was ninth at 24 points and Elmira was 15th with 12 points.
Carlo Cipolla of Horseheads won Class A in the 110 hurdles, taking fourth overall, in 1611 to make states. Ethan Wentzel of Corning was seventh in 16.65.
Cella McLaughlin won the girls’ 100 hurdles in 14.14 to make states. Notre Dame’s Makenna Keough was fifth in 16.61.
Nicholas Kowal won Class A in the 1600 in 4:26.86 to make states. Corning’s Nicholas Ferratella was seventh in 4:30.98.
Corning’s Nonye Okoro, Laiana Gardiner, Claire Devlin and McLaughlin won the 1600 relay in 4:02.99 to make states. Horseheads was fifth in 4:12.09 and Elmira was ninth in 4:18.47.
Corning’s boys finished second overall, first in A in the 1600 relay in 3:25.75 to make states with a relay of Dexter Badger, Ryan Calkins, Charlie Warner and Wyatt McDonald.
In the girls’ 3200 relay Corning’s team of Elianna Schneider, Leila Ianovici, Lauren Roche and Olivia Martinec won in 9:53.32.
For the boys the Hawks team of Greg Homa, Bryce Hammond, Sebastian Boutwell and Jaxyn Mahoney won in 8:04.91. Horseheads was 10th in 8:53.87.
Elmira’s Selena Rollins won Class A and was sixth overall to make states in the high jump at 4-feet, 9-inches. Chinonyerem Okoro of Corning was tied for seventh at 4-feet, 8-inches.
Freddie Collins of Corning was third overall and first in Class A in the shot put at 48-feet, 9-inches to make states. Horseheads’ Calvin Cragle was fifth at 46-feet, 8 1/4-inches followed by teammate Joey Biviano at 46-feet, 7 1/4-inches. Logan Mullaney of Corning was eighth at 44-feet, 7 1/4-inches.
Corning’s Amanda McEwen was first in Class A and sixth overall in the triple jump at 33-feet, 6-inches to make states. Makenna Keough of Notre Dame was fourth at 34-feet, 7 1/4-inches.
Sophia Cimo of Corning was fourth overall, and won Class A, in the discus at 111-feet, 4-inches to make states. Layla Byzitter of Corning was 10th at 87-feet, 3-inches.
Madeline Kirk of Corning was ninth in the 2000 steeplechase in 8:38.55. Reese Conway of Corning was fifth in the pole vault at 9-feet, 6-inches and teammate Lauren Williams was ninth at 8-feet.
Luangsuwan was fourth in the 200 in 22.63 followed by Nicholas Brucie of Corning in 23.20.
Ashtyn Stark of Corning was sixth in the 3000 steeplechase in 10:50.72.
Horseheads girls made states in the 4x100 relay in 50.34, third overall and first in Class A. Corning was fifth at 52.22 and Elmira was eighth at 52.79.
