SECTION 4 BOYS' LACROSSE: HORSEHEADS LEADS LATE, BUT VESTAL RALLIES TO CLAIM SECTIONAL TITLE (2025-05-30)
Southern Tier Sports ReportITHACA — Horseheads had a four-goal lead in the third period and led by three with just over two minutes left, but Vestal rallied back for a 11-10 win in the Section IV, Class B final on Friday.
Vestal struck first in the game as Michael Hogan led 1-0 at 8:58 of the first quarter.
Horseheads scored the next four goals of the game. Brogan Sullivan scored at 8:23 and Boe Briggs scored off a Sullivan assist at 8:14, while Braden Woodworth scored at 4:58 to make it 3-1 after one quarter.
Seamus Lynch scored at 10:42 of the second quarter to go up 4-1, before Vestal got a goal from Hogan from Tom Vallely at 9:14 to make it 4-2.
Horseheads scored back-to-back goals in a 17-second span with Griffin Stevens scoring, followed by Lynch of a Woodworth assist as the Blue Raiders led 6-2.
Vestal got a goal from Brody Crowley with 7:09 left in the half and with 4:42 before the break Brodi Ahearn scored off a Hogan assist to make it 6-4. Stevens scored just 30 seconds later to put Horseheads up three at the half.
In the third quarter Sullivan scored at 10:55 to make it 8-4, before Vestal got a goal from Vallely at 5:55 to make it 8-5.
Woodworth scored off a Keenan McCarthy assist just 13 seconds later to put Horseheads up 9-5. Vestal scored 27 seconds later to cut the deficit to three after three as Cam Adams scored off an assist from Crowley.
Crowley scored with 6:25 left in the game to cut the deficit to 9-7, but Sullivan got his third goal of the game with 4:01 left to put Horseheads up three goals.
Vestal still trailed 10-7 with 2:08 left when Chris Pierce scored. Hogan scored six seconds later and it was a 10-9 game into the final two minutes of the game.
With just 1:09 left Pierce scored off a Crowley assist to tie the game.
The game went to overtime and in overtime Crowley scored at 3:06 to win the game for the Golden Bears.
