CORNING —The two Logan’s each had huge days as the Elmira baseball team dealt with the elements, and the Corning Hawks to win 9-5 in game one of the Section IV, Class AAA baseball final.

Bat flipping in the air as he ran, Logan Palmer launched a long three-run home run in the fourth inning and Elmira never looked back.

While Palmer sparked the offense, Logan Demember threw six innings of four-hit ball in the win.

Corning scored a pair of runs in the third to lead 2-0, before Palmer’s home run capped a four-run fourth inning to give Elmira the lead.

“It felt good,” Palmer said. “Boys got quality at bats. Got on, I just had to drive them in and that’s what I did. Got the boys going a little bit. Swung it well.”

Playing on the turf at Corning Community College the rain never let up during the game as it was steady all night long.

“Elements were tough, but fought through it,” Palmer said. “No other team I’d rather play with.”

Demember went six innings, allowing four hits and five runs, three earned, striking out six. Palmer got the last three outs, striking out two and not allowing any hits or runs.

“It was really tough,” Demember said of the elements. “And, getting a grip on the baseball, it was hard. But, we came out and we knew it was going to be hard from day one. Day one of the season we just had to work hard. Throwing fast balls, working in some curve balls. It was tough, but we got the job done.”

Demember just went out and did the best he could dealing with the wet ground, and wet baseballs all day.

“It was tough, but you have got to do what you’ve got to do,” Demember said. “I came out here. I worked with what I had and did what I had to do.”

That big fourth inning was a huge turning point for the Express, who had five runs in three games against the Hawks in the regular season.

“We needed that to, because they got two that inning (before),” Demember said. “I didn’t want us to get down on ourselves and back down. We stayed up, we put up four that inning. It was huge.

“So much easier to play with a lead. That’s why I love these guys. We got up there and we didn’t back down.”

Elmira scored two in the fifth and led 6-2, but Corning got a run back in the sixth to make it 6-3.

Elmira tacked on some insurance in the top of the seventh when they scored three runs. Which proved crucial as Corning fought back in the bottom of the inning getting two runs back themselves.

“Insurance, that was huge because they had a decent last inning,” Demember said. “If we didn’t get those insurance (runs) it might have been a different story.”

Everyone contributed for Elmira in the game as eight different players had eight hits or walks in the game.

“Everybody did their job today,” Palmer said. “Everyone had their job and everyone did it.”

For Elmira getting the first game of the series was huge.

“It’s a good one, it’s a good one,” Palmer said. “We wanted to bring it back home. Game one is always a big one. Pressure is not on us now, pressure is on them, and we are home.”

This was a much better start for the Express than a year ago.

“A lot better than last year,” Demember said. “This is the start we needed. This is just the first game. Next game is going to be big Big game one win.”

Palmer had the home run and had four RBI in the game. Demember, Noah Cain and Aedan Palmer had hits in the game. Demember scored a run and Cain scored two runs. Aedan Palmer had a double, scored two runs and was intentionally walked twice in the game. Cain also walked twice in the game.

Jackson Cavalier scored two runs and Quinn Hanrahan scored a run, while Aidan Ranck had an RBI in the game. Hanrahan walked twice in the game.

Johnny Graham had two hits, with a double and a run scored for Corning and Reilly Wells, Kyle Miller and Elijah King had hits. King and Wells each scored runs. Dom Weed and Connor Monroe scored runs and Monroe and Gavin Walker and Miller each had RBI.

Miller worked 4 2/3 innings, striking out five and allowing three hits and six runs. Andrew Welch worked 1 1/3 innings, allowing no hits and three runs, none earned. He struck out one. Walker threw a hitless, scoreless inning, striking out two.
