SECTION 4 BOYS' GOLF: HORSEHEADS' FESETCH EARNS TRIP TO STATES; ELMIRA'S CAVALIER HAS BUSY DAY (19 PHOTOS) (2025-05-24)
By Brian FeesSouthern Tier Sports ReportHORSEHEADS — Horseheads senior Jack Fesetch posted a round of 79 on Saturday, and then the waiting game started as he hoped it would be enough to get him into the New York State boys’ golf championships.
His score was one of the first posted to the board at the Section 4 medalist tournament, and then Fesetch had to wait as score after score got posted, hoping that the 79 would be good enough to get him into states.
In the end Fesetch wound up in a four-way tie for sixth place, as 79 wound up being the cut number to be among the top nine who made it to states.
“It’s tough, playing the waiting game, watching the board,” Fesetch said. “It was tough conditions out there. I didn’t have the best front nine. But, I battled the second nine and was able to pull out a good score.”
Fesetch put up a 41 on the back nine, which was the first nine Fesetch played, before he came back and shot a 38 on the front nine.
This year the weather wiped out Thursday’s round at the medalist tournament, leaving everything to a one-round tournament on Saturday.
“It’s a lot tougher,” Fesetch said. “Makes you have to really go out and have your A game and when things weren’t going my way early on it’s tough to regroup and come out the second nine and post a respectable score. But, I still did that.”
It’s tough for STAC golfers who played their seasons in the fall to come back out in the spring, and in one round put up a strong score.
“It’s just a grind,” Fesetch said. “Being off the whole spring season, trying to get out whenever I can, trying to get my reps in. I was just happy I was able to post a score in these conditions.”
For Horseheads coach Christine Fischer it’s special to see Fesetch heading to states.
“I am extremely proud of Jack,” Fischer said. “He has worked his tail off and is extremely deserving of this. He has grinned it out day after day. He played a good round today. I can’t wait to see where he goes come the state tournament.”
From the first tournament of the year on, when Fesetch won the prestigious preseason DiNunzio Tournament, the Horseheads senior has had a special year.
“He had an amazing round that first tournament,” Fischer said. “He won the individual first place medalist at the DiNunzio and since then has really been focused and quite frankly on fire.”
Now it’s onto states for Fesetch.
“Very excited, I can’t wait,” Fesetch said.
The state meet this year is going to be at Mill Creek Golf Course in Churchville. It’s in the Rochester area, near where Fesetch will play college golf next year at Nazareth.
“I was hoping it was 36 (the medalist tournament at Mark Twain), because those are all college events, 36 holes” Fesetch said. “So, I was a little bummed it was moved to 18. But, I know my coach (for Nazareth) is going to be up there when I play at Mill Creek so I can’t wait to play in front of him and see him.”
Elmira’s Jackson Cavalier had a busy day. The Express golfer shot a 89, with a 43 on the front nine. He then headed from Elmira to Waverly to play in Elmira’s 2-1 win over Ithaca in the Section IV, Class AAA baseball tournament.
