Southern Tier Sports ReportCORNING — Horseheads had a doubles team finish as runner-up and Corning had a third-place singles and doubles player at the Class A Sectional tennis championships.
Top three finishers advance to the state qualifiers.
Dominic Wood and Hayden Chatlani were second in doubles for the Blue Raiders. After a bye the pair had a 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (8-6) win over a pair from Ithaca, before topping Corning’s Sam Masaki and Djordje Marjanovic 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Horseheads was edged in the final 0-6, 6-3, 3-6 by a pair from Ithaca.
Marjanovic and Masaki won 6-0, 6-0 in their first match over Russell Lewis and Kerry Klein from Elmira. They won 6-3, 6-3 in the third-place match over a pair from U-E.
Mark Hong and Devin Ianovici of Corning fell 6-0, 6-2 in their first match, while Ryan Burns and Joseph Juan of Horseheads had a bye then fell in their first match to the same U-E team.
Bradley Terwilliger and Ryan Lewis of Elmira had a bye then fell to the eventual champions from Ithaca 6-0, 6-0.
Derek Guo of Corning was third in singles, winning 6-2, 6-4 over his teammate from Corning Jacob Chung.
Guo won his first match 6-3, 6-1 over Luke Huang of Ithaca.
Chung won his first match 6-2, 6-0 over Lincoln Chop of Horseheads.
Zach Kathan of Horseheads fell 6-1, 6-1 to Jacob Conti of U-E in his first match.
