BINGHAMTON — Caitlin Yearick wrapped up a weekend for the ages as the Horseheads softball team were named co-champions of the Mirabito Tournament at Greenlight Park.

Yearick was the MVP of the tournament, after hitting five home runs and driving in 13 runs in the three games. Horseheads topped Mepham 14-11 on Sunday and were named co-champions with St. Anthony’s after the championship was canceled due to weather.

Yearick, a St. John’s commit, was 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, three runs and five RBI on Sunday. She was 8-13 with 13 RBI, five home runs, a double and 10 runs scored in the three games.

“It was really exciting to win MVP this tournament,” Yearick said. “I know there were many skilled players among the teams there, and it was an honor to be noticed among them.”

For Yearick this was a weekend unlike she’s ever had before.

“I have never had a weekend like this one, and I’m blessed to have been able to play and swing the bat the way I did,” she said. “I’m also grateful to my teammates for their support and their ability to pick me up when I make mistakes in the field, allowing me to not stress about them when I get up to bat.”

Megan Wolf, Reagan Burge and Chloe Perritt all made the all-tournament team.

Wolf was 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored on Sunday and Burge was 4-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored.

Seventh grader Presely McInnis had a career-best three-hit day with three runs scored.

Perritt, Dylan Young and Aubrey Howe had hits. Howe had two RBI and a run scored and Perritt had an RBI and a run scored. Briley Beach scored a run and Grace Cronin had an RBI.

Burge struck out two in 2 2/3 innings and Perritt struck out two in 4 1/3 innings.

The whole weekend was special for the Blue Raiders.

“I think this weekend was great for the team,” Yearick said. “Our ability to outwork and out play the other teams, despite the weather conditions, is what gave us an edge. Weather isn’t something we can control, and if a team can mange to embrace it and find a way to play through it as well as have fun at the same time, then that team will be able to come out on the other side with a better outcome than others.

“I think this weekend will give us confidence going into next week’s games, and personally I think it will give me some too.”
