HORSEHEADS — It was a record-setting day for area athletes at the Blue Shoes Invitational at Horseheads High School.

Corning won on the girls side with a score of 191, 111 points more than runner-ups Vestal and Horseheads (80 each). Elmira was fifth (41) followed by Notre Dame (39)

On the boys side Horseheads was second at 114. Vestalwon at 120. Corning was fourth at 77 and Elmira was sixth at 57 with Notre Dame eighth at seven points.

Chase Luangsuwan of Horseheads won the boys’ 100 with a school-record time of 11:12. DJ Coprew of Elmira was second at 11.30 with teammate Ta’hjay Molina-Bacome was fifth at 11.69 followed by Corning’s Jacob Deneka (11.91 and Horseheads’ Harrison Hirshman (11.93).

The old record was 11.15 by Christian Lapitan in 2021.

For Luangsuwan the record was on his mind since freshman year. He just wasn’t sure Saturday was going to be the day with the weather being rainy and windy.

“The weather is a bit cold, but I made it work,” he said. “With the wind and the rain (he wasn’t sure he’d run his best time). Luckily it was in my favor though.”

Now that the record is set, the next goal is sub 11.

“On a crappy day I ran 11.12 but on a nice day I think I can get below 11,” Luangsuwan said. “It (11 seconds) feels closer than ever. It was the goal last ear, we didn’t really make it but this year I’m going for it.”

And, now that he has the school record Luangsuwan would love to lower that record to a number that can’t be reached anytime soon.

“I am going to shoot it to the ground,” he said. “I’m going to make sure it’s going to stand for a while.”
