COLLEGE SOFTBALL: ELMIRA COLLEGE SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH RUSSELL SAGE (15 PHOTOS) (2025-04-18)
Southern Tier Sports ReportHORSEHEADS – The Soaring Eagles used a walk-off in extra innings to secure a split on Friday at home against the Russell Sage College Gators. Elmira rallied for a 2-1 victory in the eighth inning during game one, before falling 18-4 against the Gators in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED: • Russell Sage took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game one following a single that allowed the go-ahead run to score.
• Elmira responded with a pair of hits in the second inning to knot the score 1-1. Jocelyn Jean delivered a single for EC and would later score on a double to right field by Katie Distefano.
• The game would remain tied heading into the seventh inning as the Gators looked to threaten in the top of the frame. Sage recorded a pair of hits with two outs, before a run down between third and home would get EC out of the inning.
• Distefano notched her second hit of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning to put the potential winning run on the bases. Jordyn Frantz would pinch-run for Distefano and eventually swipe second to get into scoring position.
• A fielding error with two outs in the frame would allow Ashlyn VanFleet to reach safely at first and Frantz to score from second to secure the 2-1 walk-off victory in game one.
• Maryann Sobel improved to 4-4 on the season for Elmira after tossing eight innings and allowing one unearned run off six hits to go along with four strikeouts.
• The Soaring Eagles would fall behind 3-0 in game two against the Gators before rallying for four runs in the bottom of the third inning.
• Jean delivered a single back up the middle, which allowed two runs to score for the Soaring Eagles to trim the deficit to 3-2. Riley Storrs followed with an RBI groundout to knot the score 3-3, before VanFleet added a single to score Jean and give EC a 4-3 advantage.
• The lead would be short-lived for the Soaring Eagles, as Russell Sage answered with three runs in the fourth and fifth innings. The Gators would go on to score nine runs in the top of the sixth inning en route to an 18-4 victory in six innings.
UP NEXT:The Soaring Eagles will recognize the Class of 2025 on Saturday with a doubleheader against the Hartwick College Hawks at the Holding Point at 11:30 a.m.
