STAC BASEBALL: CORNING OPENS SEASON WITH WIN OVER MAINE-ENDWELL (2025-04-03)

Southern Tier Sports Report
ENDWELL — The Corning baseball team opened the season with a 1-0 win at Maine-Endwell on Thursday afternoon.

Due to poor field conditions at Corning at the last minute the game was moved to Maine-Endwell.

I am thankful that our athletic director, Becca Gentile, was willing to do many last minute things on her end to pull this together late today so our kids could get a game.

“We looked okay for our first game out. We did many very good things and there are many things we still need to work on. Nolan Smith was fantastic his first outing this year. I can’t say enough about him. He loves to pitch and it shows. Our defense was solid today also, Johnny Graham made a spectacular play at second base. Kyle Miller made a couple solid plays at third base, and freshman Landon Speciale caught a great game. It’s a long season, so we will keep grinding and getting better each week.”

Corning’s run came in the fifth as Reilly Wells got an infield hit and moved to second on a Dom Weed walk. A great heads up running play by Wells was huge to steal third and he scored on a ground ball off the bat of freshman Speciale.

Smith worked six innings, striking out six and allowing four hits and two walks. Connor Monroe threw a perfect inning of relief.

Elijah King had two hits and Monroe had a double, while Gavin Walker and Wells had hits.
