ELMIRA HEIGHTS — There is a mix of youth and experience for the Edison baseball team as they prepare to kick off the season.

“It feels great, a lot of new faces, a lot of returners too,” Edison coach Chris Bennett said. “It’s pretty exciting. The guys are just here, focused. We are working hard, putting the pieces together and trying to figure it out.

“I have eighth graders, a few ninth graders, a lot of 10th graders. But, I do have a good core of returners, it’s a good mix. Kids are starting to get along, getting to know each other and that’s a big deal. I feel like if we keep moving forward we are going to be successful.”

The weather has been nice enough this spring for the Spartans to get outside starting early in the preseason.

“We were able to get out on the turf,” Bennett said. “It’s nice, our football field is turf so it’s nice we were able to get out there. The weather has been cooperative so far.”

The Spartans had a scrimmage at Penn Yan and open the regular season this week.

“Scrimmage Saturday (this past Saturday) and right into our season on Wednesday,” Bennett said. “And, start with a tough game right off the bat with Trumansburg on the road. So, it’s going to be a good test for us early to see where we stand.

“Penn Yan Academy for our scrimmage, one of our old players at Edison took the program over there. Zach Levanduski, he was a heck of a player, Male athlete of the year here his senior year. We reached out to each other, so I get to reunite with him, and his team, and it’s his first season.”
