SECTION 4 SOFTBALL: HORSEHEADS HAS STRONG MIX OF YOUTH, EXPERIENCE AS THEY GET READY FOR SEASON (15 PHOTOS) (2025-03-21)
By Brian FeesSouthern Tier Sports ReportHORSEHEADS — As the calendal flips from winter to spring, the Horseheads softball team got back to work this week, preparing for a new season.
“A lot of fun,” Horseheads coach Paul Richmond said. “It’s been a long winter.”
This year’s Horseheads team has a strong mix of upperclassmen, including a pair of Division I commits, and a seventh and eighth grader on varsity.
“We have a really good mix,” Richmond said. “Some of the young ones aren’t as young as you think because they came up last year. We are in a spot where they play a lot of travel ball. They have hit the wight room in the offseason. We do have some real young ones. First time in a while we have a seventh grader and an eighth grader on the team that we expect to contribute.
“But, with the leadership of Chloe (Perritt) and Megan (Wolf) and some of the others, I think we are in a really good spot and the season will be a learning process for us.”
Wolf is a Binghamton commit, while Caitlin Yearick committed to St. John’s.
“We have several 10th graders and a bunch of 11th graders and three seniors, Carly Hayes is out for the year,” Richmond said. “We are well balanced, so it’s going to be fun watching the young ones learn from the old ones and by the end of the season there will be no young ones, they will just all be veterans.”
The Blue Raiders know they face a tough schedule, including playing in a division with reigning state champion Corning.
“We are super excited,” Richmond said. “We have the potential. When we were down in Virginia last year we beat state champs and we split with Corning last year. Those are just always two of the biggest games of the year for us. It’s fun playing those games knowing in sectionals we have to run a tough schedule with U-E and Vestal and M-E. But, that’s the STAC, that’s the fun of it.”
