ELMIRA — From 30 degrees to 70 degrees, from rain to some snow flakes, it’s been a wild first week of practice for the Elmira flag football team and all area spring sports teams.

“It feels good,” Elmira coach Jimmy McCauley said of being back at practice. “We were freezing our butts off on Monday, then Tuesday and Wednesday feels pretty good. It’s crazy in the spring, looking forward to when we get a little more consistent weather.”

The numbers are strong for the Express, who will have a JV team along with the varsity this year.

“Phenomenal, anytime you can add more participants in your sport it’s never a bad thing,” McCauley said. “Gives us a little bigger pool to choose from and we have excellent numbers.

“Can’t say anything more about the girls efforts and participation levels, it’s been really un out here.”

The JV squad gives the Express time to develop more and more players in the sport.

“Everybody hears the word football in flag football and thinks of numbers like 40 and 50 and it’s hard, because it’s similar to basketball, there are only seven girls who play at a time,” McCauley said. “A girl might be on offense and defense so that kind of whittles it down a little bit.

“It’s nice to have a JV program where you might have a ninth grader who you think is going to be pretty good, but she’s behind a senior. Now, it’s a good chance where she can get some playing time. She can get some experience and she can develop over the season and you never know what is going to happen after that.”
