ELMIRA — Megan Wolf and the Horseheads Blue Raiders girls’ basketball team got off to a red hot start before Wolf made history, becoming the 7th girl in program history to score 1,000 career points in a 52-35 win over Susquehanna Valley on Thursday night.

Wolf entered the game needing 11 points to reach the milestone. Horseheads started the game up 15-0 and Wolf had eight of them, with two threes. She reached 1,000 points on a corner three in the second quarter, finishing the game with a game-high 24 points.

“I didn’t really know it’s happening tonight,” Wolf said. “It’s a cool experience to have. I’m feeling good right now.”

In coach Andy Scot’s 25 years as coach the Blue Raiders have had five 1,000 point scorers, and the program has had seven overall.

Wolf joins Saundi Lamoreaux, Leslie Baker, Hollie Cook, Amanda Schaefer, Jillian Casey and Alyssa DeRichie with 1,000 career points.

“It’s really great because when she (Wolf) came up as a freshman her job was just to try and shut down people defensively,” Scott said. “She did a nice job with that and she just kind of turned into a scorer. She’s had some good kids around her. People like Sophie Bonnell was a big help and some of these other kids.

“She’s had some great teammates get her the ball and she’s done a great job finishing the ball. But, one of the best things I like about her, we talked about it as a sophomore. If you can’t hit the three, start taking it to the basket. With her body frame she does a good job getting to the basket, shooting the three and now pulling up for the midrange jumper. I’m proud of her.”

When Wolf was a freshman she never thought she’d hit this milestone.

“Definitely isn’t think freshman year offense would be my thing,” she said. “But, as the years went on my role on the team changed and it happened.”

Scott loves the all-round player that Wolf has become.

“She’s a very good player, very unselfish,” he said. “The bottom line is she wants to win more than anyone. She will do whatever it takes. I think if you ask her right now you can score 1,000 points or win the state title, she’d win the state title. That’s what kind of kid she is. But, at the end of the day, she’s a great defender, she plays very well on offense and the funny part is this is not even her number one sport. She’s just a great athlete, a great person to be around and a great person to have as a teammate.”

Wolf, who is a committed to Binghamton to play Division I softball, had 11 fourth-quarter points, going 7-for-8 from the line to help seal the win in the fourth. She was 9-for-10 from the line in the game.

Horseheads led 15-1 after one quarter after the 15-0 start and they led 28-13 at the half.

Wolf didn’t know going into the night that she was that close to the milestone.

“I didn’t really have any idea,” she said. “The vibes kind of came different, then people came to the game I wasn’t really expecting. Some family, friends, so I kind of started thinking about it, but I didn’t want it to get into my head until it actually happened.”

It was a red-hot start for both Wolf and the team on Thursday.

“Definitely good way to start the game for my mentality,” Wolf said of her early eight points. “That felt good (the team’s 15-0 start to ehe game). That was a good team start, really proud of our team coming out that strong.”

After the eight early points, Wolf’s teammates started looking for her to get a three to hit the milestone.

“You could definitely see the target on the court was me after getting those first eight,” Wolf said.. “But, my teammates did a great job helping me with that. You can’t score 1,000 points without people getting you the ball. My four years on the court, I can’t take the credit, my teammates got me open and get the ball in my hands so credit goes to them too.”

And, for Wolf watching the emotion on her teammates faces when she scored her 1,000th was special.

“That was very fun to see,” she said. “To see all the smiles on their faces, my favorite was seeing my mom in the stands, my parents in the stands, so that was really cool.”

Scott knows that the moment was special for the whole team, and can only help the younger girls have something to strive for.

“All these kids, it’s just nice to be part of it,” Scott said. “The best thing is we didn’t tell anybody until coach Bonnell said something today when we got on the bench and the game was starting. The looks on everybody’s faces was pure elation. It is nice for the younger girls to see that. It doesn’t happen very often. But, with a lot of hard work and commitment, it’s really good for her. I”m proud of her and proud of the team.”

For most of Wolf’s career she had Sophia Bonnell helping get her the ball and on her 1,000th point it was Bonnell’s younger sister, Sammie Bonnell, an eighth-grader, who got the ball to her for the milestone three.

“Bonnell family has definitely helped me a lot with everything in my athletic journey and basketball,” Wolf said. “With their dad coaching me, their mom cheering, Soph starting me off, and giving me the ball and Sam finishing it and giving me my 1,000th point.”

The whole night was just special for Wolf.

“Very fun, just fun atmosphere to be in,” Wolf said. “Fun for the team, ready to go into postseason play. Then after the shot kind of a weight off your shoulders. But, really fun continuing the game and in the end getting the win was the big thing.”

Bonnell and Maddie Ribble both had 10 points, each with two threes. Jordyn Gross had four points and Emma Kamas had three.

Hayle Warner led SV with seven points and Ava Kariam had six points.

Horseheads and Susquehanna Valley are both 15-5. Horseheads will next play Binghamton in the sectional final on Sunday, March 9 at Visions Memorial Arena. Susquehanna Valley is the top seed in the Class B playoffs.
