SECTION 4 BOYS' WRESTLING: SMITH MAKES STATES AS CORNING HAS FIVE PLACE AT SECTIONALS (20 PHOTOS) (2025-02-16)

BINGHAMTON —Clayton Smith earned his first trip to states, while five Corning wrestlers placed at the Section IV, Division I Championships at Visions Veterans Memorial Arena on Sunday.

“Corning had a solid performance today at the D1 Section IV Championships,” Corning coach Brian Guilfoyle said. “Multiple Corning wrestlers competing in sectionals for the first time earned placement finishes. Seventh grader Carter Soltis — fifth; freshman Shane Harlacker — sixth and junior Braxton Evans fifth. The highlight of the weekend was junior Clayton Smith qualfying for states by defeating a high quality wrestler in Horseheads’ Jaxson Burchard, an opponent that Clayton had lost to this season.

“In the finals, Clayton wrestled an excellent match against Lucas Mosher, another strong Horseheads wrestler. We had a call get reversed at the conclusion of the third period, which took winning points away from Clayton, sending the match to overtime, where we came up a little short. The Corning wrestling community is very excited for Clayton making his first trip to the NYSPHSAA Wrestling Championships and for our wrestlers that found the podium at sectionals.”

Corning was eighth as a team with 58 points.

Smith was edged 14-11 in sudden victory 1 by Lucas Mosher of Horseheads in the final.

Smith had a 9-2 win in the quarters and beat Burchard by fall in 5:59 in the semifinals to get into the final.

Soltis took fifth at 101. He had a pin in 4:55 over Caiden Hwalek of U-E in the fifth-place match.

Soltis had a 13-9 win to get into the semis. After falling in the semis he was edged 5-3 to wind up in the fifth-place match. Ryan Teribury was 0-2 at 101.

Harlacker was sixth at 108. He fell by fall in 1:37 to Dom Romeo of Elmira in the fifth-place match. Harlacker had a 10-1 major decision win to get into the medal round.

Matthew Mahon was sixth at 152 pounds. He forfeited the fifth-place match. Mahon had an 11-2 major decision win to get into the semifinals. After falling in the semifinals he forfeited his next two matches to take fifth.

Evans had a pin in 3:33 in the fifth-place match at 190 over Abdul Jabiry of Binghamton-Seton Catholic. Evans had an 11-0 win to get into the semis. After falling into the consolation rounds, he was edged 12-7 before winning the fifth-place match.

Caiden Zangerle was 0-2 at 124.

Patrick Akerelrea went 2-2 at 160. he had a pin in 3:11 and one in 4:00 on the day on the day.
