HIGH SCHOOL INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD: CORNING BOYS AND GIRLS CLAIM CLASS SECTIONAL TITLES (24 PHOTOS) (2025-02-09)
Southern Tier Sports ReportITHACA — The Corning boys and girls each won the Division I Class Sectional championships at Cornell University on Saturday.
It’s the 11th straight year for the girls and 14th for the boys. Oneonta won the Division II titles.
Overall Corning’s girls won at 209 with Oneonta second at 82. Overall Oneonta boys had the top score at 146, followed by Corning at 140.
For the girls Horseheads was eighth at 42, followed by Notre Dame (36). Elmira was 17th at 23 points and Edison was 32nd with five points.
For boys HOrseheads was seventh at 49, Elmira was 12th at 29 and Notre Dame was 22nd at eight points with Edison 28th with two points.
In the 3000 meters for Division I Corning’s Olivia Martinec was thjird in 10:52.91 followed by Elmira’s Ella Devlin (11:24.84) and Corning’s Lauren Roche (11:41.82). Horseheads’ Suzanne Sydlansky was seventh at 11:49.58 followed by teammate Sonya Dordoni at 11:49.70.
In the 3200 Nicholas Ferratella of Corning was fourth at 10:05 followed by teammate Sebastian Boutwell (10:09.41), Horseheads’ Nicholas Kowal (10:30.70) and Allen Wetmore (10:30.75) and Corning’s Christopher Lawson (10:37.88). Notre Dame’s Gevin Meier was fifth in the D2 race in 11:02.02.
In the girls’ 1000 Kyra Gross of Corning was second in 3:20 followed by teammate Elianna Schneider (3:20.50). Cecilia Cowen of Horseheads was fifth at 3:22.83. IN the D2 race Notre Dame’s Marta Albaladejo Tejedor was eighth in 3:43.09.
In the boys’ 1000 Gregory Homa of Corning was second at 2:39.52 followed by teammates Jaxyn Mahoney (2:39.60) and Bryce Hammond (2:39.66). Elmira’s Hayden Rolls was eighth in 2:50.58 with Horseheads’ Max Williams 10th in 2:53.57.
Horseheads’ Stella Harrison won the 1500 race walk in 8:17.55 followed by Corning’s Madeline Kirk (8:40.57), Anna Patton (8:46.75) and Bethany Morey ((:17.48).
In the girls’ 55 meters Lauren DeRosa of Corning was second in 7.51 with Horseheads’ Mylynn Flint fourth in 7.56 followed by Mattisen Johnston of Corning (7.62). Emma Mase of Corning was eighth in 7.89. Hannah Lasko of Edison was fourth in D2 in 7.62.
Zuri Ruffin of Corning was second in the boys’ 55 meters in 6.53 followed by Horseheads’ Chase Luangsuwan (6.63), Patrick Laney (6.76), Elmira’s DJ Coprew (6.81) and Corning’s Nicholas Brucie (7.01). In D2 Nikko Cheplick of Edison was seventh in 7.02 followed by teammate Zimear Young (7.13).
In the girls’ 600 Leila Ianovici was third in 1:44.94 followed by Martinec (1:45.27). Gross was eighth in 1:56.06.
Mahoney won the boys’ 600 in 1:26.99 with Elmira’s Jadon Lagonegro fourth in 1:30.97 and Charles Warner of Corning sixth in 1:31.37. Braxton Houghtelling of Elmira was 10th in 1:34.23. Augustus Ector of Edison was ninth in the D2 race in 1:35.39.
In the 1500 meters Schneider was second in 5:26.50 and Madelyn Wise of Elmira was fourth in 5:30.62. Corning’s Lillian Deuerlein was eighth in 5:42.33.
Gregory Homa was third in the boys’ 1600 in 4:36.82 followed by Hammond (4:40.52). Edison’s Jameson Duggan was sixth in the D2 race in 5:14.97.
Carlo Cipolla of Horseheads won the 55 hurdles in 8.02 with Adrian Blouin of Corning fifth at 9.29 and teammate Marshall Allen was eighth in 9.84.
Cella McLaughlin of Corning won the girls’ 55 hurdles in 8.32 followed by Claire Devlin in 9.48. Horseheads’ Erica Bancroft was fourth in 9.68 followed by Reese Conway of Corning (9.73). Elmira’s Azavyanna Morgan was eighth in 10.77 followed by Naudia Inness of Elmira.
Makenna Keough of Notre Dame won the girls’ D2 hurldes in 9.19. She had the second fastest overall time between the two divisions.
McLaughlin won the girls’ 300 in 42.60 with teammate Brooklyn Gordon third in 45.02. Elmira’s Arrianna Jones was seventh in 46.15 followed by Ianovici in 47.26. Zoey Brooks of Elmira was 10th in 48.04. Lasko was fifth in the D2 race in 45.13.
Dexter Badger was second in the boys’ 300 in 36.91 and Marco Cipolla of Horseheads was fifth in 40.33 followed by Brucie in 40.40. Cheplick was ninth in the boys’ D2 race in 40.00.
Conway, Kendall Curreri, Deuerlein and Martinec won the 4x800 relay in 10:48.28 and Elmira’s Marriah Faucett, Devlin, Wise and Millie Kierst took third in 11:45.38.
Edison’s Mayla Falank, Madison Palmieri, Madison Hubschmitt and Olivia Vinsek took seventh in 13:35.05.
For the boys Warner, Ashtyn Stark, Samuel Kirk and Michael Naylor took second in 8:58.01 and Elmira’s Ryder Johns, Ayden Coleman, Cameron Riley and Rolls took sixth in 9:50.82. In the D2 race Justin Mullen, Meier, Parker Coleman and Antonio Campanella took fourth for Notre Dame in 10:35.17.
Corning’s DeRosa, Devlin, Johnston and Aurora Jellif won the 4x200 relay in 1:49.64 followed by Horseheads’ Bancroft, Allyson Perry, Flint and Emma Guzylak (1:55.42) and Elmira’s Brooks, Morgan, Jones and Inness (1:57.26).
Notre Dame took fourth in the D2 4x200 relay with a team of Isabella Mashewske, Eleanor Green, Zoey McClelland and Keough in 1:58.63 with Edison’s Sabou Diakite, Lasko, Isabella Lamb and Natalie Spier ninth in 2:05.21.
Horseheads won the boys’ 4x200 relay with a team of Laney, Josh Wilson, Carlo Cipolla and Luangsuwan in 1:37.02 and Elmira’s John-Charles Walton, VanTroy Clemente, Darien Coprew and Nicholas Shellienberger took seventh in 1:47.43.
Corning’s Alisyn Conway, Laina Gardner, Jellif and Gordon won the 4x400 relay in 4:24.81 and Horseheads’ Elise Gulati, Alanna Stillman, Madison Bancroft and Annabelle Fitzpatrick took fifth in 5:06.83. In the girls’ D2 race Notre Dame’s Lylie Colunio, Caitlin Keenan, Trintiy Riddick and Albaladejo Tejedor took fifth in 4:51.83.
In the boys’ 1600 relay Chase Smith, Houghtelling, DJ Coprew and Jadon Lagonegro won in 3:40.66 and Corning’s Blouin, Warner, Ethan Jiang and Maxwell Jennings took fifth in 3:49.81 followed by Horseheads’ Luca Sa’Pereira, Harry Hirshman, Chris Funair and Carver Robbins in 4:03.88. Edison’s Cheplick, Ector, Carson Balash and Zachary Sternfels took sixth in 4:08.12.
Calvin Cragle of Horseheads took third in the shot put at 43-feet, 8 1/2-inches followed by Corning’s Logan Mullaney at 42-feet, 1/2-inches. Joseph Biviano of Horseheads was sixth at 40-feet, 11-inches followed by Corning’s Benjamin Herrmann (40-feet, 11-inches) and Freddie Collins (37-feet, 10 1/4-inches).
McLaughlin won the long jump at 17-feet, 5 3/4-inches followed by Johnston (16-feet, 10 3/4-inches). Elmira’s Azavyanna Morgan was sixth at 14-feet, 4 1/2-inches followed by Madison Bancroft (14-feet, 3 1/2-inches). DeRosa was ninth at 13-feet, 6 1/2-inches.
Keough won the girls’ D2 long jump at 17-feet, 4-inches, the second best overall time between the two divisions.
Ruffin won the boys’ long jump at 21-feet, 10 1/4-inches followed by Baxter (21-feet, 7 1/2-inches). Reilly Wells of Corning was fourth at 19-feet, 5 3/4-inches. Aeden Marreo of Notre Dame was fifth at 17-feet, 2 3/4-inches. Campanella was 10th at 15-feet, 10-inches.
Madie Sweet of Corning was fourth int he girls’ high jump at 4-feet, 6-inches with teammate Hadley Murray seventh at 4-feet, 6-inches followed by teammate Chinonyerem Okoro at 4-feet, 3-inches. Mashewske was eighth for the Notre Dame girls in D2 at 4-feet, 6-inches.
Maxwell Jennings won the pole vault at 13-feet with teammate Ethan Wentzel third at 12-feet, 6-inches and teammate Jacob Deneka fifth at 9-feet, 6-inches.
Sophia Cimo of Corning was third in the girls’ shot at 32-feet, 10-inches with Kaydence Ector of Corning fifth at 31-feet, 1-inch followed by Samantha Harvey at 30-feet, 6 3/4-inches.
Cimo won the weight throw at 46-feet, 9 1/2-inches with Harvey third at 41-feet, 9 1/2-inches. Madelane Reynolds of Corning was fifth at 36-feet, 2 1/2-inches and Verneece Sumner of Elmira was seventh at 30-feet, 5 3/4-inches.
Wells was second in the high jump at 5-feet, 6-inches followed by Darien Coprew at 5-feet, 3-inches. Corning’s Jayden Moore was sixth at 5-feet, 3-inches with Allen eighth at 5-feet. Campanella was eighth in D2 at 5-feet, 3-inches.
Reese Conway won the girls’ pole vault at 10-feet, 1-inch and Elmira’s Smith was third in the boys’ triple jump at 39-feet, 5 1/2-inches with Horseheads’ Connor Trimber fifth at 38-feet, 1 1/2-inches. Joshua Fajardo was ninth at 36-feet, 10 3/4-inches.
Claire Devlin won the girls’ triple jump at 33-feet, 9-inches with teammate Jordan Gridley third at 30-feet, 10 1/2-inches followed by Madison Bancroft (30-feet, 5 3/4-inches) and Inness (30-feet, 3 1/4-inches. Amanda McEwen of Corning was ninth at 27-feet, 1/4-inches.
In D2 Keough was third in the triple jump at 34-feet, 4 3/4-inches followed by Green at 32-feet, 1 1/2-inches. Edison’s Diakite is ninth at 28-feet, 2 1/2-inches.
Collins was third in the weight throw at 53-feet, 1/4-inches followed by Mullaney (51-feet). Jacob Blencowe (47-feet, 7 3/4-inches).
