SECTION 4 GIRLS' WRESTLING: ELMIRA GOES 2-0 AS THEY HOST FIRST HOME DUAL, CORNING GOES 1-1 (24 PHOTOS) (2025-01-30)
By Brian FeesSouthern Tier Sports ReportELMIRA — The Elmira girls’ wrestling team hosted their first ever dual meet on Thursday, with a double dual against Corning and Owego.
Elmira topped Corning 31-28 and they topped Owego 49-10. Corning beat Owego 25-5.
“It was really fun,” Elmira coach AJ Sindoni said. “We had a lot of people here. It was something new for the area. Obviously there is a lot of good teams aorund the area so it was nice to show what we can do as a new team.
“It was really exciting. They (the Elmira girls) were real excited. They were here early, earlier than I told them to be here, so that’s when you know they are excited. They were happy to have a home match with just girls.”
In the Elmira match against Corning the Express got forfeit wins from Codi Lundfelt (126), Emily Moldt (165), Ismariech Rivers-Morgan (235), Alexis Collins (94), Ameera Mahmood (100) and Alea Hartford (107).
Corning’s Rhyss Padgett pinned Savannah Hartford in 2:50 at 132 and Devin Price of Corning pinned Atlantis Cherry in 1:20.
Kendra Close of Corning won by technical fall 10-0 in 2:44 at 152 over Mackenna Burnett and at 185 Ava Northrup of Corning pinned Zoie Barr in 2:47.
Lauren Mahon of Corning pinned Serenity Rollins in 2:07 at 114 and Corning’s Kaegan Rhodes won by technical fall 12-2 in 1:45 over Josalyn Irvin at 126.
In the Owego match the Express got forfeit wins from Callie Comfort (120), Burnett (152), Moldt (165), Bar (185), Mackenzee Davis (235), Collins (94), Mahmood (100) and Irvin (114).
Owego’s Jaelynne Lovell pinned Lundfelt at 126 and at 132 Savannah Hartford of Elmira won by technical fall 10-0 in 2:08 over Mikenna Wilbur.
Atlantis Cherry of Elmira had a pin in 49 seconds over Tatum Kowalski and Ashlee Crawford-Bauer pinned Alea Hartford in 30 seconds at 107.
In Corning’s win over Owego, the Hawks got a pin from Mahon in 39 seconds against Crawford-Bauer of Owego at 114 and Rhodes pinned Lovell in 35 seconds at 126.
Price got a pin in 46 seconds for the Hawks over Chandler at 132 and at 138 Kowalski of Owego pinned Padgett in 3:34.
Close (145) and Northrup (185) got forfeit wins for the Hawks.
For Elmira the match, in front of the home fans, can only help the team in the future.
“I told them this is a big event for them,” Sindoni said. “To not just get high schoolers next year and middle schoolers, but also the youth program bigger numbers for girls. They knew it was big for them, for the future and it went well. I’m excited for the future of Elmira wrestling.”
