Matias had five fourth-quarter points, hitting three free throws in the final quarter, and Taft hit a three in the fourth, while Woodruff had four fourth-quarter points.
“A really gritty game tonight,” Elmira coach A’Don Allen said. “Corning is much improved and they played really well tonight. Alyvia Woodruff and Sonny Taft hit some big buckets in the fourth quarter and Mariah Matias hit big free throws to get us the win. Three games in six days is tough sledding, especially with two rivalry games in the mix. Proud of the girls to get through this.
“We’ve got 10 days before we play again. Gives us a chance to rest a bit, but also rest and refocus for the rest of the season. The Regents week break from games will give us a chance to fine tune who we are. We believe we still haven’t played our best ball and we want to be doing that as we get deeper in the season.”
Corning coach Julie Pierce is happy with the way her team played.
“I am proud of how we competed,” Pierce said. “We will learn from this loss and keep growing. We are headed in the right direction.”
