SOUTHERN TIER SPORTS REPORT: WORK, CORNING TEAMMATES HEADLINE ALL-STSR VOLLEYBALL TEAM (2024-12-20)
By Brian FeesSouthern Tier Sports ReportThe Corning Hawks brought home a sectional championship and that has led to them landing four of the five major award winners for the Southern Tier Sports Report All-Star Fantastic 15 all-star team.
Gracee Work is this year’s player of the year. She had 247 kills and 224 digs on the season for Corning. She also had 13 blcoks and a 92% serve rate. She was a third-team all-state player in 2023 and a 2023 and 2024 all-STAC player.
The Defensive Player of the Year is Sam Molingou of Corning. She had 38 blocks and 187 kills with 56 digs. She had 23 aces and 88% serve rate. She was an all-division pick in the STAC in 2023 and All-Conference in 2024.
The Offensive Player of the Year is Madi Jones who had 120 kills and 12 blocks on the season. She helped lead Elmira to a sectional final and is committed to play at Brockport.
The Newcomer of the Year is Teresa Hacker of Corning. She moved into the area this year and as an all-division all-star and helped Corning win sectionals.
The Hawks won a sectional championshp this year and helped the team win team titles at the Corning Torunament and Tioga Tournaments. Corning coach Barb Smith is this year’s coach of the year.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Gracee Work, Corning
* Had 247 kills and 224 digs this year. Had 41 assists and 13 blcoks. Had a 92% serving rate. Was a third-team all-state player in 2023 and a 2023 and 2024 All-STAC player. Plans to attend Daemen College for the Physician’s Assistants program and try and play volleyball. Led Corning to a sectional title.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Sam Molingou, Corning
* Had 38 blocks on the year with 187 kills and 56 digs. She had 23 aces and an 88% serve rate. Was all-division in the STAC in 2023 and All-Conference in 2024. Led Corning to a sectional title.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Madi Jones, Elmira
* Had 120 kills and 12 blocks on the year. Helped lead Elmira to a sectional final. Committed to play at Brockport College.
NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR: Teresa Hacker, Corning
* Moved into the area this year and helped Corning win the Sectional championship. Was an all-division all-star in the STAC this year.
COACH OF THE YEAR: Barb Smith, Corning
* Guided Corning to a sectional championship this year. Helped them win team titles at the Tioga and Corning tournaments this year.

* A Division all-star and key member of Corning’s sectional championship team.
MELINA SCHWESINGER, Corning
* A Division all-star and key member of Corning’s sectional championship team.
MADISON WOOD, Corning
* A Division all-star and key member of Corning’s sectional championship team.
Ava Dennard, Elmira
* A defensive standout for the Express as they made a sectional final.
KAILEY RIPLEY, Edison
* Had 149 assists and 129 digs on the year.
CHARLEE STROMAN, Edison
* Had 154 digs and 78 kills on the season.
MAYCIE BENNETT, Edison
* Had 106 digs, 83 kills and 29 aces.
GRACIE SHERMAN, Horseheads
* Had 118 digs on the season.
LEXI MALAY, Horseheads
* Led Horseheads with 136 digs this year.
