STSR PRESENTS THE DRAKE HVAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: CORNING'S RUFFIN AND MCLAUGHLIN (2024-12-20)

There were a lot of great performances this week, leading to some tough choices for the athlete of the week honors. In the end, it was Corning’s Zuri Ruffin and Cella McLaughlin who are the Southern Tier Sports Report, sponsored by Drake HVAC Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning Athletes of the Week.

Zuri Ruffin

Corning, track and field
Set a meet record at the Ithaca College High School Invite with a long jump of 23-feet, 2 1/2-inches. Came back one meet later and jumped 23-feet, 4 1/2-inches to win at Nazareth College.  Ruffin also won the 55 meters with a school-record time of 6.46 at Nazareth. His time of 6.46 would have been fourth at the last indoor state championshp. Ruffin’s jump at Nazareth would have placed him second at indoor states last year.

Cella McLaughlin
Corning, track and field
Broke the school record with a leap of 17-feet, 11 1/2-inches in the long jump at the Ithaca college H.S. Invite. Then re-broke the record with a leap of 18-feet, 6 1/2-inches at Nazareth College. Also took third in the 55 hurdles at Ithaca and won the event by a second at Nazareth in 8.46. McLaughlin’s time in the hurdles at Nazareth was also a school record. the 8.46 would have been seventh at last year’s indoor state meet. Her jump at Nazareth would have been third at the last state meet.
