THE WEEK AHEAD: WINTER SPORTS SEASONS GET UNDERWAY AS FIVE SPORTS GET GOING (2021-11-28)

Southern Tier Sports Report
The winter sports season starts to get into full swing this week as area teams begin their seasons.

There are 23 events this week, in five different sports, as the seasons get going.

Here’s a day by day look at the week ahead and how many events there are each day.

MONDAY (2)

* The week kicks off with a pair of bowling matches. The Horseheads bowling team opens the season with a home meet at Dixie Lanes against Elmira, while Corning travels to Union-Endicott to start the year.

TUESDAY (5)
* Two area swimming and diving teams kick off their season. The Horseheads boys play host to Binghamton at 5:30 p.m., while the Elmira swimmers welcome Johnson City at 5:30 p.m.

* There are three more bowling matches on tap as Notre Dame opens the season against Waverly at 4 p.m., while Edison has their second meet, after starting last week, when they host Marathon at 4 p.m. Elmira travels to Maine-Endwell at 3:40 p.m.

WEDNESDAY (2)
* There are two more bowling matches as Horseheads hosts Johnson City and Corning has their first home match, welcoming Vestal to town.

THURSDAY (3)
* The first wrestling match of the season is held as Elmira welcomes Vestal to town.

* There are two more bowling matches, both on the road, as Notre Dame goes to Watkins Glen and Edison is at Tioga.

FRIDAY (6)
* The Horseheads wrestling team opens the season with the Mark Stephens Classic that features seven teams — Horseheads,  Bolivar-Richburg, Campbell-Savona, Canister-Greenwood, Gouveneur, Penfield and Waverly. Canisteo and Gouvenor are both state ranked in D2 and Penfield is state ranked in D1.

* The first girls’ basketball games of the season tip off as Edison welcomes Newfield to town, Elmira heads to Waverly and Horseheads hosts Colonie.

* There are a pair of boys’ basketball games as Edison takes part in the Lansing Tip-Off tournament and Notre Dame welcomes Whitney Point to town.

SATURDAY (4)
* Horseheads hosts the second ay of the Mark Stephens Invitational with wrestling beginning at 10 a.m. Also on the mats the Elmira wrestling team is at Newark Valley.

* The Edison boys head to Lansing for day two of the Lansing Tip-Off Tournament.

* The Corning boys’ swimming and diving team kicks off the season as they head to the Hilton Invitational.
