HIGH SCHOOL BOYS' BASKETBALL: EDISON DOWNS NEWARK VALLEY FOR FIRST WIN OF SEASON (2024-12-17)
Southern Tier Sports ReportELMIRA HEIGHTS — The Edison boys’ basketball team picked up their first win of the season, topping Newark Valley 44-36 on Tuesday night.
“Talon LaPlante on the inside grabbed a ton of rebounds and led us,” Edison coach Lenny Smith said. “We now know what it feels like to win. We have to improve defensively.”
LaPlante had 15 points in the game, including eight in the opening quarter.
Edison led 15-14 after one quarter, but the Cardinals went ahead 20-17 at the half.
The Spartans outscored Newark Valley 27-16 in the second half to get the win.
Drew Slaven, Brendon Smith and Jaden Bennett all had six points in the game. Smith had a pair of threes, both in the second half to help seal the win and all six of Bennett’s points came in the final quarter when Edison outscored the Cardinals 16-8.
Mason Mawhir had four points for Edison and Mark Cornacchio had three points, while Braedyn Gulich and Zach Piper both had two points.
Tim Wojtysiak led Newark Valley with 14 points and Anthony Dougher finished with 10 points. Dougher was 6-for-8 from the free throw line in the game, going 4-for-4 in the opening quarter and Wojtysiak scored in every quarter, scoring four points in each of the first three quarters.
Austin Green hit two threes for six points and Josh Benjamin also had six points in the game.
