SOUTHERN TIER SPORTS REPORT: MARTINEC, MAHONEY HEADLINE ALL-STSR ELITE 11 XC TEAMS (2024-12-02)

Southern Tier Sports Report
It’s a newcomer on the girls side, and a veteran on the boys side that headline the all-Southern Tier Sports Report Elite 11 boys and girls’ cross country teams.

Corning newcomer Olivia Martinec is both the runner of the year and newcomer of the year on the girls side. On the boys’ side senior Jaxyn Mahoney is the runner of the year, while teammate Christopher Lawson is the newcomer of the year.

Corning coach Ray Lawson is the boys’ and girls’ coach of the year.

Martinec was third at both the STAC and sectional meets and was 40th at the state meet to lead all locals at all three races.

Mahoney was a third-place finisher at sectionals, sixth at STAC, 48th at states and 71st in the federation race.

Lawson was 12th at sectionals and 23rd at the STAC meet for the Hawks as a freshman.

The boys’ elite 11 includes Mahoney and Lawson along with teammates Sebastian Boutwell, Gregory Homa, Nicholas Ferratella and Bryce Hammond. Homa, Ferratella and Boutwell were all state qualifiers. Notre Dame state qualifier Gavin Meier is on the team along with Horseheads state qualifier Nicholas Kowal and teammates Gavin Hornsby, Hunter Lewis and Allen Wetmore.

On the girls side Martinec is joined by teammates Lauren Roche, Elianna Schneider, Leila Ianovici, Madie Sweet and Lillian Deuerlein. All seven finished in the top 13 at sectionals.

Elmira state qualifiers Ella Devlin and Madelyn Wise are on the team along with Horseheads’ Mackenzie Baker and Suzanne Sydlansky.
