COLLEGE BASKETBALL: HORSEHEADS GRAD CLEARWATER PLAYS IN NATIONALLY TELEVISED GAME AT D1 BONAS (24 PHOTOS) (2024-11-21)

Southern Tier Sports Report
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Senior Chance Moore recorded a double-double and the St. Bonaventure men's basketball team moved its record to 5-0 with a 76-54 win over Mansfield Wednesday night at the Reilly Center.

With the win, the Bonnies have just their third 5-0 open to a campaign since 1990.

Horseheads’ Louie Clearwater was 0-for-1 from the floor for Mansfield. Waverly graduate Scott Woodring played 24 minutes, with five points, two rebounds and two blocked shots.

For Mansfield it was a game on national television, ESPN+, with Mansfield grad, and ESPN personality Freddie Coleman on the call.

Moore recorded 16 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Bonnies on the stat sheet.

Lajae Jones added 11 points while Dasonte Bowen chipped in nine points and eight assists.

Things didn't come easy for the entire night, however, as Mansfield proved to be a pesky visitor.

Bona's slowly built a six-point lead in the early going that was cut back to one, 20-19, to prompt a Bonaventure timeout with 8:45 left before intermission.

The hosts led by six at the break, 36-30, and scored six of the second half's first seven points to pull ahead by double digits for the first time.

Layups from Moore and Bowen on back-to-back possessions pushed the lead to 14 and the Mountaineers would never close back within less than a dozen the rest of the way.

The Bonnies owned the boards, 46-29, and outscored the undersized Mounties by 26 in the paint, 46-20.

Eleven different Bonnies recorded points, wrapped up with a three-pointer from sophomore Miles Rose to complete the scoring, the first of his Bonnies career.

Owen Chambers gave Mansfield a spark with 11 points and seven rebounds.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH MARK SCHMIDT
"Our identity this year has to be defense and rebounding and getting offense off of our defense."

"I thought in the second half, Dasonte did a much better job pressuring the ball. It starts with the quarterback, it starts with the point guard, it starts up front. He did a good job of pressuring and getting some enthusiasm and excitement. I thought Jaxon in the first half came in for a couple minutes and gave us a lift when we went to that 1-2-2 three-quarter court press, but we have to play better."

"We have to play with more enthusiasm, and it all starts on the defensive end. We have to get points off turnovers. The talk we had at halftime was that we have to start playing harder, and we started doing that. We started getting the ball to the high post offensively, started defending better, started defending the three better, but we need to play hard for a full 40 minutes. We always put on the board: 30 seconds, 40 minutes. We have to play hard every possession for 30 seconds for 40 minutes. I didn't think we did that in the first half. The second half we played better. We only forced nine fouls and we need to be more aggressive."

"The numbers look good, but we didn't play the way we're capable of playing. You can make the excuse that it's a Division II team and there was a little bit of a lack of motivation, but we only have 31, 32 opportunities and we only have 15 or 16 opportunities at home. We owe the people who come and support us night in and night out the best effort. We're not going to play great all the time. We're going to miss some shots, but our effort can't be questioned."
